‘It Was Almost Burning My Hands’: Rami Malek Recalls Getting Racially Profiled; Reveals He Was ‘Thrown’ On Police Car

In a conversation with the Guardian, Rami Malek shared an instance of discrimination he experienced at the Los Angeles airport. He explained that he was targeted due to his ethnicity as a person of Middle Eastern descent.

Malek stated that he was shoved into a police cruiser, and authorities informed him that his description fitted a thief who had taken liquor and a handbag. He added that the car’s engine was scalding hot, causing him to fear burning his hands while he lay on it.

Speaking about the incident, the actor from Bohemian Rhapsody recalled, “The engine was scorching hot—it seemed like they were racing nearby and it almost singed my fingers.” He continued with a chuckle, “I remember joking in the police car, ‘Alright, this is quite a risky predicament. I might just end up in jail for something I didn’t do.’

In simpler terms, Malek finds it challenging when traveling because airport officials frequently question his identity based on his document’s name. Yet, his celebrity status usually helps him in such situations.

He explained, “I can’t imagine how you manage to overlook that. I’m categorized as ‘white passing,’ but I possess very distinct features, and we certainly didn’t blend in.

Despite working in the industry for close to twenty years, Malek maintains that he continues to feel like a newcomer.
