‘It Is What It Is’: Cynthia Erivo Reveals Reason Behind Not Using Bathroom After Donning Her Costume

As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for behind-the-scenes stories, I must admit that Cynthia Erivo‘s journey into the magical world of Wicked has been nothing short of extraordinary. Her portrayal of Elphaba is not just a role; it’s an odyssey she embarks on daily, complete with challenges that would make even Glinda’s wand quiver.

In the forthcoming film “Wicked,” Cynthia Erivo will assume the appearance of Elphaba. Looking back on her filming experience, the actress discussed the challenges she encountered when needing to use the restroom due to her character’s makeup and costume.

During an interview on the Sentimental Men podcast, the actress shared an interesting detail about playing her character – she often chose not to use the restroom while wearing her intricately layered costume due to its complexity.

In this new project, Cynthia Erivo is set to act alongside Ariana Grande and Michelle Yeoh. To emphasize the distinctiveness of her character, the actress will be depicted in shades of green, wearing a black gown and an oversized hat.

The actress mentioned that she doesn’t use the restroom when she’s wearing her costume and harness, stating, “Once I’m dressed up like this—and I admit it might not be smart—I won’t do it… I won’t handle it. There are too many layers. I won’t deal with it. I won’t go to the bathroom. That’s just how it is.

Besides wearing the gown, Erivo was also required to don a corset to ensure the dress had the right appearance. The actress who played Harriet shared that she was often strapped onto the set during filming. It took the actress an extensive amount of time to prepare for scenes, but she could easily remove and replace the outfit.

In my commitment to capturing every moment authentically, I found myself donning the costume for approximately 12 to 14 hours straight. My days began as early as 7 a.m., immersing myself fully into the production.

Speaking more about her filming adventures, the actress from Pinocchio shared, “Those times could get quite intense.” She further explained, “They could be incredibly taxing as your body undergoes some peculiar experiences.

On set, people frequently inquired if the actress required a restroom break, yet Erivo politely declined, asserting that she was fine without it.

Instead, the actress shared her happiness about working alongside Ariana Grande, rather than the other two actresses she had auditioned against.

The movie “Wicked” tells the tale of two friends whose relationship is special, but an evil presence threatens to break their bond. Catch it in theaters starting from November 22.
