‘It Helped Heal A Part Of Me’: Angelina Jolie On Playing Maria Callas In Her Latest Pablo Larraín Film

As an ardent fan, I am absolutely thrilled about Angelina Jolie‘s latest venture into the world of biopics! Playing the iconic Maria Callas, a role that Jolie herself calls “once in a lifetime,” has not only showcased her exceptional acting skills but also given us a glimpse into her personal journey.

In a conversation with Deadline, Angelina Jolie, known for her role in Pablo Larraín’s latest biopic portraying the life of the world-renowned opera singer, Maria Callas, described this character as both demanding and fulfilling. She referred to Maria as a “one-of-a-kind” individual.

She mentioned that it was undeniably the hardest part for her, as she was talking about the seven months she invested in mastering six of the most renowned arias linked to the famous prima donna soprano who passed away due to a heart attack in Paris, 1977.

In Steven Knight’s screenplay, we journey through the final days of Callas, as she reminisces about her remarkable career on some of the world’s most famous opera stages. Despite these past triumphs, she comes to understand that she will never surpass those accomplishments. Her story is further complicated by an unfulfilled romance with Aristotle Onassis, adding a layer of personal tragedy.

The unique script aligned perfectly with Angelina Jolie’s creative vision, making the project an irresistible opportunity for her. As she explained, “Such projects don’t come my way frequently. When they do, it’s not often with this exceptional material and this particular director, so these rare chances only present themselves once in a while.

Regarding her time working on the Maleficent film, the actress expressed that it surpassed all her expectations and portraying someone she admired felt like a precious gift facilitating emotional recovery. She further stated, “The role transformed me personally.” When probed about how the movie affected her, Jolie responded that it was too intimate to elaborate.

Ever since my debut day on set when I struggled to breathe and shed tears, to standing tall at La Scala, Milan, where I belted out songs with all my might, those transformative moments have left an indelible impact on me,” I shared. The actress from the movie ‘The Wanted’ confessed that she can no longer listen to Callas’s recordings now that the filming has wrapped up.
