‘It Felt Incredibly Natural’: Dakota Johnson Speaks On Her Directorial Debut Loser Baby; Says She’s ‘Open To Making More’

As a passionate fan, I must say that Dakota Johnson has truly outdone herself with her directorial debut “Loser Baby”. Her ability to step behind the camera and bring such a heartfelt and authentic story to life is nothing short of inspiring. The way she effortlessly navigated through her role as a first-time director, making it feel like a natural extension of her creative journey, is truly commendable.

Actress Dakota Johnson, known for her role in ‘Madame Web’, has stepped into the director’s chair for the first time with the film ‘Loser Baby’. This upcoming production will have its premiere at this year’s Toronto Film Festival. In an interview with Deadline’s TIFF studio, she spoke about her experience as a new director and expressed her enjoyment and ease during the process: “I truly enjoyed making it, and it seemed incredibly instinctive and effortless to me.

The brief film “Loser Baby” centers around Talia, a woman identifying as queer, who begins to reconsider her relationships as the ideas about commitment among her friends change over time, according to the official summary. Johnson, recognized for her performances in Fifty Shades of Grey and Netflix’s Persuasion, has also shared her plans for future directorial projects.

She expressed that she’s open to creating more items, but she’s uncertain if she’s prepared to do so at the moment. She feels there’s a lot of room for growth and learning in this area, and she doesn’t consider herself ready yet. However, she mentioned that her decision could change unexpectedly, making it difficult to forecast.

Following Thalia Bernstein’s guidance, I find myself deeply immersed in a story that centers around me, Talia, grappling with stress in my long-term relationship. I confide in my dear friend Lee about this burden, and it reaches a pivotal moment at Ashley Madekwe’s birthday celebration. Bernstein, who also wrote the script, confirmed that this narrative was indeed drawn from real-life experiences.

As someone who’s been in a long term queer relationship, Bernstein longed to see a story that authentically represented it. “I just wanted to explore that there are so many ways to be in a relationship,” she added. As for Johnson, she created a fun environment while directing the film.

In the making of “The Persuasion”, the lead actress disclosed that she motivated her co-stars to think on their feet during filming. While the movie’s plot was strictly adhered to and all scripted elements are present in the short film, Johnson aimed to challenge the actors a bit more.

During an interview with Variety, the actress shared that she consumed excessive amounts of caffeine during filming. She reminisced about feeling imaginative, energetic, and motivated at the time, unaware that her caffeine consumption had escalated. In her own words, “It was as if thousands of milligrams of caffeine were flowing through our bodies.
