‘It Feels Just So Liberating’: Ewan Mitchell On Getting Into His House Of The Dragon Character

As a dedicated fan and ardent follower of the Game of Thrones franchise, I can wholeheartedly say that Evan Mitchel embodies Aemond Targaryen with an uncanny precision. His deep-seated love for the series is evident from his enthusiasm during the transformation process into the character – hair, makeup, and costume. It’s like donning armor, shedding my own skin to become someone else entirely.

During a chat with Screen Rant, actor Evan Mitchell (Aemond Targaryen) reminisced about the fights in House of the Dragon’s first season that mirrored his efforts to seize the Iron Throne within Zynga’s mobile game.

Michel is unquestionably an ardent enthusiast of the franchise, who relishes donning his character’s costume and makeup. He shared that the experience, from driving to the set in the morning to going through the process of hair, makeup, and costuming, feels incredibly liberating for him.

He found that as he donned each item of Aemond’s attire or trinket, his personal identity seemed to fade away, leaving only the character behind, particularly when he wore the one-eyed patch symbolic of Aemond. “It’s as if I’m peeling off another layer of my own skin with every addition,” he explained, “and once I put on that eye patch, it’s like I’ve stripped myself completely bare; all that remains is Aemond, and Ewan disappears.”

Mitchell praised the diligent efforts of makeup designer Amanda Knight and costume designer Caroline McCall, acknowledging that their collective efforts significantly contributed to breathing life into the character. He further emphasized, “Their collaboration truly inspires one to let go of their own identity.”

During his engagement with Game of Thrones: Legends, an acclaimed interactive game where players can assume roles and construct strategies to traverse Westeros and ascend the Iron Throne, Mitchell found himself drawn to Rhaenyra Targaryen as his preferred character to control.

In addition to praising his on-screen mother, Alicent Hightower, played by Olivia Cooke in the series, the actor also complimented her performance. “Olivia Cooke, or ‘Liv Cook,’ is an incredible actress,” he stated. “Her gaze can be as powerful as Alicent herself.” He further expressed that working with her and sharing intense scenes is a highlight of his job. “It’s like stepping into another world,” he explained.

During their conversation, Mitchell shared his thoughts about the well-known incident involving him and Lucerys that ultimately resulted in the latter’s demise. “It wasn’t Aemond’s fault,” he explained to the source. “He was trying to manage his dragon, but she simply wouldn’t obey him.”

The speaker continued by stating that following the incident, Aemond had two options: admit his error and potentially receive mercy from Rhaenyra or flee to King’s Landing and acknowledge his actions. He warned that if Aemond chose the latter course, he would become the most wanted individual in the kingdom, a situation that would not benefit anyone.

House of the Dragon is now streaming on Jio Cinema.
