Isaiah Washington stated on X (previously known as Twitter) on April 23rd, that Sandra Oh played a significant role in his decision to rejoin Grey’s Anatomy in 2014. He wrote, “Sandra Oh was the catalyst for my return in 2014. She stood firm and wouldn’t let the show continue without me, and she ultimately succeeded. I have great admiration for Sandra Oh!
During a short visit, Washington’s character (Dr. Preston Burke) played a crucial role in wrapping up Cristina Yang’s storyline as she left in season 10. He offered her an entire cardiothoracic hospital in Switzerland, which provided Cristina with the chance to further her career at its pinnacle.
Many fans were taken aback when they saw Isaiah Washington again, given the events leading up to his dismissal in 2007. It was during the filming of Gray’s Anatomy in 2006 that Washington got into a heated argument with Patrick Dempsey. This dispute allegedly included Washington using a derogatory term aimed at fellow cast member T.R. Knight, which is considered offensive towards the LGBTQ+ community.
At that point, Washington wasn’t openly acknowledging his sexual orientation. The event sparked a significant uproar, eventually resulting in Washington being fired from the series.
Although Sandra Oh hasn’t explicitly mentioned returning to the role of Washington, she has freely talked about her strong attachment to her character’s growth.
During a 2020 conversation with Kerry Washington for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Sandra Oh shared that her experience on Grey’s Anatomy granted her the opportunity to establish a connection with the writers and guide her character’s development.
Additionally, she mentioned that she frequently stood up to Shonda Rhimes and many of the writers to safeguard Cristina’s plotlines. Oh also stated, “I don’t consider it a sacrifice,” referring to her work on Cristina’s character development as her most significant accomplishment during her tenure on the series.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve always admired Sandra Oh for her versatile acting skills and the unique characters she brings to life. For many years, Sandra had made it clear that she would not rejoin the cast of Grey’s Anatomy. However, in a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Sandra revealed a potential change of heart. In her own words, “For the longest time, it was an unwavering no, and now… I don’t know.
Although Oh stated she currently has no plans to rewatch the series, she conceded the intense affection viewers hold for character Cristina Yang. “That’s what gives me pause,” the actress remarked, hinting subtly at potential future involvement.
