As a longtime Marvel enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of these iconic characters since the early days, I must confess my heart skipped a beat upon hearing the news that Robert Downey Jr., aka Iron Man, was initially slated to make an appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. The thought of seeing him interact with the unfiltered mercenary and the adamantium-clad mutant was too enticing to resist.
In the final days of July, Deadpool and Wolverine made their cinema debuts and have been drawing solid crowds at the box office. A significant aspect of the film’s appeal is its frequent iconic guest appearances. Unfortunately, one cameo that moviegoers might have missed was Robert Downey Jr., who, surprisingly, had lines in an extended version of the script.
In an interview with a media outlet, Paul Wernick, one of the writers for the Marvel movie, disclosed that him and Rhett Reese wrote a script featuring the Academy Award-winning actor making an appearance in the film.
According to Reese, who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter, it’s confirmed that Downey will indeed make an appearance in the film. The scriptwriter shared, “Yes, that’s correct. That was something we were considering.” Wernick also mentioned, “We have a script written for Downey’s role.”
In the initial stages of these characters’ films (Deadpool and Wolverine), it was proposed that Robert Downey Jr., together with Jon Favreau, would be involved in the casting process. The idea was that Wade Wilson might have been introduced as part of the Avengers team. However, Marvel Studios ultimately decided against bringing Downey Jr. into the project, as they had other projects in mind for him.
Rhett Reese shared with a media outlet that the Marvel Cinematic Universe had grander intentions for Robert Downey Jr., which we’ve recently discovered, involving the character of Doctor Doom. However, he added that ultimately, these plans likely didn’t come to fruition, although he doesn’t know the exact reason why not.
At the Marvel event during San Diego Comic-Con, it was revealed that the actor from Oppenheimer will rejoin the franchise as the antagonist Dr. Doom. Additionally, it was disclosed that the Russo brothers will return to direct both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Regarding the appearances, Deadpool and Wolverine recruited Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth, two well-established Marvel characters. Evans took on his role as Johnny Storm, or the human torch, which he played in the 2005 movie Fantastic Four. On the other hand, Hemsworth reappears as Thor, depicted in one of the future clips holding Deadpool’s body and weeping.
In the forthcoming Avengers film, set to hit theaters in May 2026 and May 2027, Robert Downey Jr. will put on the costume of the villainous Victor von Doom.
Deadpool & Wolverine is running successfully in theaters.
