The Weeknd is reflecting on the public persona he portrays following a significant struggle with mental health issues, which have greatly influenced his latest album titled “Hurry Up Tomorrow.

On the latest issue of Variety, the artist behind the smash hit Blinding Lights (originally known as Abel Tesfaye) openly shared how a period of mental distress led him to reassess every aspect of his musical life and the pressures associated with it.

Tesfaye expressed to the media that he felt it was crucial for him to reflect and sort out his life’s direction. He explained, “In order to comprehend what transpired, confront it, gain fresh insights, and begin anew. Essentially, this upcoming album reflects a mental breakdown I experienced.

Looking back, the Starboy singer believes that a significant shift in his career took place during his 2022 tour. It was during a performance at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium where he suddenly lost his voice midway through the show, causing him to postpone it. For Abel, this incident served as “the final straw,” leaving him feeling dejected as he contemplated the heavy self-imposed demands of his career.

This experience significantly influenced the creation of his new album and also led him, Tesfaye, to ponder about retiring from his stage name The Weeknd. He expressed that he felt he had conveyed enough through this persona and even contemplated ending it on a high note. In his words, “Why leave if not at your best?

Tesfaye made it clear that his music career isn’t over, as he continues to seek fresh opportunities. He explained, “I don’t believe I can stop doing this, but everything should feel like a challenge. And for me at the moment, The Weeknd – whatever that represents – has been fully explored.
