Is The Last of Us Returning for Season 3? Here’s What Fans Should Expect From Bella Ramsey Starrer

On Sunday, May 25th, the gripping second season of HBO’s acclaimed post-apocalyptic series The Last of Us came to a close with its highly anticipated Season 2 finale, Convergence. As viewers grappled with the intense emotional impact of this episode, discussions turned towards the show’s future.

It looks like good news is on the horizon: The Last of Us has been officially renewed for Season 3.

In April 2025, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey’s acclaimed show made a comeback for its second season, picking up from where it left off in the 2020 game The Last of Us Part II. Five years after the events of Season 1, the story continued to delve into themes such as loss, revenge, and moral ambiguity. This time, Ellie was on a mission to track down Abby, the person who had mercilessly taken Joel’s life.

Over the course of seven episodes, fans have been drawn further into a world where the Cordyceps virus continues to advance. Now, the airborne spores transmit it easily from one person to another, making the risk of contagion greater than ever. Fresh dangers emerge as rival groups, such as the Washington Liberation Front and the Seraphites, grow increasingly hostile towards each other.

In a deliberate creative choice, showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann opted for a condensed seven-episode structure for Season 2, acknowledging that the latter half of the game upon which this season is based contains an abundance of content, likely extending beyond just one additional season.

During our conversation about the narrative, Mazin proposed that the story might extend through four seasons. He characterized Season 3 as notably broader in ambition and scale.

According to Mazin, it’s highly likely that if viewers continue to watch and new episodes can be produced, Season 3 will be substantially bigger. Additionally, he hinted that the narrative might necessitate Season 4.

On April 9th, HBO announced that they were renewing the show for a third season even before Season 2 had been released. Francesca Orsi, the head of HBO’s Drama department, expressed her appreciation for the exceptional job done by the creative team in crafting the sequel and was eager to see what future episodes would bring.

There isn’t a confirmed release date for Season 3 of Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal’s popular series at the moment. But based on production timelines, it looks like they might begin filming in 2026, with a possible air date set for early 2027.

The Last of Us Season 2 episode premiered on May 25 on HBO and Max.
