Is Star Trek Canceled? Rumors Hint at a Major Franchise Reset

According to recent reports, speculation about Donald Trump saving Star Trek has been circulating. Now, there’s a new development suggesting that Paramount might be considering ending the entire franchise as part of a potential major shakeup, possibly involving Skydance Media acquiring it.

Essentially, the situation mirrors that of Disney+ with Marvel and Star Wars; a significant amount of investment has been made, yet the profit margin is lacking, primarily because of content that raises doubts among viewers.

Initially, Paramount+ was promoted as the hub for Star Trek upon its debut. Yet, viewership dwindled after the content and shows produced by Alex Kurtzman failed to deliver compelling Trek narratives. Instead, they seemed more focused on conveying a specific message, much like what transpired with Kathleen Kennedy and Star Wars, as well as Kevin Feige and Marvel – audiences just aren’t tuning in.

Once more, we revisit Star Trek, this time with insights from Tachyon Pulse YouTuber. Remember when he mentioned Anson Mount reached out to him after speculations about the Trump administration influencing reshoots for the upcoming season of Strange New Worlds? Furthermore, he’s shared exclusive details like Karl Urban potentially returning to Dredd and updates on Doctor Who, Stargate, as well as confirming a major Alien vs. Predator crossover is in the works.

What does the YouTuber say about Star Trek?

Paramount to END Star Trek TV shows

In a recent video, titled “Crucial for the Conclusion of Star Trek TV Series,” the YouTuber discusses information he received from his contact at Skydance regarding the future of Star Trek. According to him, there’s a possibility that Skydance may not renew their contract once Alex Kurtzman’s term ends (Secret Hideout being Kurtzman’s production company).

I’ve recently concluded a conversation with my key contact at Skydance. They’ve been providing me with tidbits of info for some time, and they’ve delivered more details about the current situation.

It seems they’re strongly considering not extending the deal with Secret Hideout for Star Trek production and aren’t rushing into new Star Trek ventures at this moment.

Star Trek not performing, divided fan base

Based on the YouTuber’s claims, Skydance has scrutinized Paramount’s significant franchise properties, including Star Trek. Similar to Marvel and Star Wars at Disney, their assessment indicates that Star Trek is not generating sufficient revenue to cover its expenses. Unlike Disney, which reduced volume and budgets, Skydance might opt for more drastic measures.

They examined Star Trek, noting its highly divisive fan base and the high cost of production relative to its returns, which haven’t been favorable.

Neither Star Trek nor Strange New Worlds excel in this area. In fact, among all the ongoing Star Trek adaptations, this one is arguably the least successful.

“It costs too much to make and just not enough people are watching it.”

Star Trek 4 not happening

According to reports, by mid-2027, when Alex Kurtzman’s contract concludes, it seems that all of his Star Trek series might cease production, and potentially, any films currently in the pipeline may be scrapped, with the exception of a possible prequel.

It seems that the production of Star Trek 4 has been put on hold, but a prequel movie is expected to continue.

Approximately by the summer of 2027, we can expect the final season of “Strange New Worlds“. It’s possible that this could be the last Star Trek series shown on our screens for an extended period.

Section 31 a bust

The YouTuber says the bad ratings are a big factor in the decision:

Initially, Section 31 performed well and maintained steady hours, but suddenly, the work hours plummeted drastically, much like a lemming in a Star Trek outfit falling off a cliff. In other words, the workload decreased at an alarmingly rapid pace.

Strange New Worlds is ending

Additionally, he points out that “Strange New Worlds” will conclude with its fifth season, and shows such as “Academy” are expected to finish according to their current agreement.

Strange New Worlds… initially, they didn’t intend to exceed five seasons, but now they’re hurrying to complete all five seasons instead.

Willing to farm off projects

The YouTuber mentions that instead of keeping Star Trek exclusively on Paramount+, they’ve opted for licensing deals such as giving “Star Trek: Prodigy” to Netflix. Unfortunately, even this series was terminated after Netflix declined Season 3 renewal, hinting at the shows’ lack of popularity on Paramount+.

“They are willing to farm off projects like Prodigy if it suits them.”

Star Trek hiatus

Based on what the YouTuber stated, it appears that after the Skydance acquisition gets approval from the Trump administration (as Trump has a friendly relationship with Skydance’s owner Larry Ellison), there are plans for Star Trek to take a break in 2027.

It appears there’s a thought to transition from Secret Hideout and possibly focus on making a few Star Trek films for the next decade or so, with no plans for TV currently.

The YouTube personality is contemplating if it’s preferable to have no Star Trek content at all, rather than content that is subpar. It appears the solution is clear-cut.

1) It’s anticipated that the takeover of Paramount by Skydance will be finalized within the first six months of the current year. Meanwhile, there are doubts about what will happen to the Transformers franchise at Paramount.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will debut its third season on Thursday, July 17 (two episodes initially), as Paramount has revealed in their latest announcement and shared an exciting new trailer for the series.
