Following a successful debut, Netflix has decided to bring back the popular series “The Boyfriend.” Soon, viewers in East Asia will get to enjoy the second season of this gay dating reality show.
On December 15, 2024, it was disclosed that The Boyfriend would return for Season 2, featuring and highlighting same-sex relationships. This announcement arrived after the success of the show’s initial season, which debuted with 10 episodes in July.
The program will highlight nine Japanese and East Asian gentlemen, who self-identify as gay or bisexual, as they aim to forge relationships with their fellow competitors.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the streamer wrote, “THE BOYFRIEND WILL BE BACK FOR SEASON 2!!!”
However, a premiere date for its second season has not been announced as of yet.
For the uninitiated, it’s worth noting that this program is unique as Japan’s inaugural same-sex reality dating show. Titled “The Boyfriend,” the story unfolds around a cohabiting group of gentlemen residing in a shared living space known as “The Green Room.

Additionally, the producer emphasized that since “The Boyfriend” marks the debut of a same-sex reality show within the nation, its creators were meticulous in crafting the narrative, aiming to present an “accurate depiction of these partnerships.
Additionally, Ota pointed out that during the initial season, the show did not just display romantic feelings but also emphasized profound and significant bonds among the contestants as they cultivated friendships amongst themselves.
Dai Ota expressed excitement for a fresh start with new contestants, a revamped Green Room, and innovative storytelling. He emphasized that the coming season will maintain its focus on capturing meaningful connections and delve into intriguing viewpoints and past experiences.
This season will see the return of commentators who were part of season 1, including Thelma Aoyama, Durian Lollobrigida, Megumi, Chiaki Horan, and Yoshimi Toku.
