As a die-hard DC fan with decades of comics under my belt and a soft spot for Martian Manhunter, I can hardly contain my excitement over James Gunn’s recent tease about Chocos. The connection between the green giant and these delectable treats is as iconic as Superman and his red cape!
Warner Bros., the company that owns the characters from DC Comics, aspired to create their own universe similar to Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) following Disney’s franchise success. This led to the formation of the DCEU initially. However, despite boasting an impressive lineup of stars and producing some truly fantastic films, the DCEU ultimately faced collapse prematurely due to a series of ill-advised decisions and misguided choices that were made throughout its journey.
Later on, Zack Snyder, who had been leading the DCEU, was referred to as being “let go,” and James Gunn was brought in to take over from him as the head of the project. Upon assuming control of the DCEU, Gunn found it in a state of chaos, so he opted to begin anew and establish a fresh fictional universe (the DCU). The initial phase of this new universe, dubbed “Gods and Monsters,” has already commenced.
Currently, it’s common knowledge that Gunn is working on a standalone Superman film scheduled for release next year. This film will kick off the initial phase and, while we already know quite a bit about it, there might be some unexpected elements if the recent hint he dropped is more than just a tease.
The main cast of the Superman movie has been announced, and to the public’s knowledge, the Martian Manhunter, also recognized as J’onn J’onzz, will not feature in this film. However, it is expected that the character might make an appearance in a future production, but not within the Superman movie.

After that, he pulls out some Chocos – a cookie similar to Oreos but produced by DC Comics to dodge any copyright issues with the Oreo company. They’re identical in essence, just with a different label. Now, you might wonder why these cookies are relevant to Martian Manhunter. Well, it turns out that in some stories, Martian Manhunter has a particular fondness for Chocos due to their resemblance to the green mineral Malachite, which holds a significant place in his Martian culture.
It’s widely recognized that J’onzz has a strong affinity for Chocos, often seen munching on them much like Shazam!, and there’s a comic where it was indicated he experiences cravings or withdrawal when he goes without them for an extended period. This habit of his leads many fans to speculate that Gunn might be hinting at the inclusion of Martian Manhunter in one of his upcoming productions, with the strongest assumption being Superman, though there’s a possibility he may appear in Peacemaker Season 2 as well.
The character hasn’t been officially announced yet, leading some to believe that Gunn is skillfully keeping it under wraps or else is just playing coy with us. Given Choco’s significance in the DC universe, there’s a strong possibility they might make an appearance in future projects, whether it involves Martian Manhunter or not.
