Is MAN OF TOMORROW Giving Us This JUSTICE LEAGUE Romance?

The DC Animated Universe is known for its memorable couples, like Superman and Lois Lane, and Batman and Catwoman. However, one of the most beloved pairings actually started within the animated series: the romance between Green Lantern John Stewart and Hawkgirl. With Aaron Pierre, who played John Stewart in the animated series Lanterns, now cast in the upcoming live-action Man of Tomorrow alongside Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, fans might finally see their story brought to life on screen.

The Animated Justice League Made John Stewart and Hawkgirl a Couple

John Stewart, the second Green Lantern protecting Sector 2814 in the comics, experienced several love stories. Many of these were with fellow Lanterns, including his marriage to Katma Tui, who sadly died. The comics often had tragic endings for romantic characters. Hawkgirl, originally created in 1940 as a partner and love interest for Hawkman, wasn’t typically paired with anyone else in the comics. However, Bruce Timm, the creator of the animated Justice League series, chose to explore a different dynamic for the character.

In the 2001 animated series Justice League, the character John Stewart was reimagined as a former U.S. Marine, a departure from his original depiction as an architect. The series explained that after his military service, he was chosen to join the Green Lantern Corps by the Guardians of the Universe. Hawkgirl was also introduced in a new way, appearing as an independent character for the first time, rather than being paired with Hawkman. Like her comic book counterpart, she was Shayera Thal, a winged alien warrior from the planet Thanagar, essentially a space police officer stranded on Earth. The fiery personalities of John Stewart and Hawkgirl quickly led to a romantic connection, and they became a couple in the second season. However, their relationship didn’t last.

Justice League Made Green Lantern and Hawkgirl into Star-Crossed Lovers

By the end of the second season of Justice League, it was revealed that Shayera had been deceiving everyone. She wasn’t a lost space cop as she claimed, but a spy sent by the Thanagarians to scout Earth for an invasion. She had also been in a relationship with Hro Talak, a Thanagarian warrior intended to take Hawkman’s place. The Justice League, particularly John Stewart, felt deeply betrayed. Though Shayera later switched sides and helped defend Earth against the Thanagarian invasion, she was exiled by her own people and subsequently voted off the Justice League, ending her relationship with John.

John Stewart/Green Lantern and Hawkgirl Have a Superhero Son

After the Justice League expanded to become the Justice League Unlimited, Shayera rejoined the team, hoping to make amends for her past actions. She abandoned the Hawkgirl identity, as it had been a disguise. Although John Stewart still had feelings for her, he was now in a relationship with Vixen. Despite the ongoing romantic tension, Shayera and John didn’t reconcile during the series. Later, they encountered Warhawk, a hero from the future’s Batman Beyond timeline, who turned out to be their son. This revealed that they were ultimately destined to be together.

John Stewart and Hawkwoman Get Flirty in the Comics

For a while, DC Comics writers have avoided pairing up the characters like they did in the animated series. However, recent issues of Green Lantern Corps show a developing romantic connection between John Stewart and Hawkwoman, Shayera Hol, leading many to believe it’s only a matter of time before the comics officially bring this classic couple together.

Hawkgirl’s Wild DC Comics Backstory

Hawkgirl has a surprisingly complex history in comic books, with several different characters taking on the role. The original Hawkgirl wasn’t an alien; she was a warrior who was repeatedly reborn over millennia, always fighting alongside her husband. In the 1940s, Shiera Hall became the first Hawkgirl, equipped with special wings, and teamed up with her husband, Hawkman. Later, DC introduced Shayera Thal, an alien Hawkgirl from the planet Thanagar, who continues to appear as Hawkwoman. In 1999, a new version, Kendra Saunders, was revealed to be the reincarnation of the original Shiera Hall, and she’s currently the main Hawkgirl. It’s easy to see why fans sometimes get confused!

Green Lantern and Hawkgirl’s Possible Romantic Future in Man of Tomorrow

Who is Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl in the new DC Universe? According to the actress, she embodies all previous versions of the character. She’s playing Kendra Saunders, who originates from Earth, but is actually the latest reincarnation of several heroes, including a warrior from the planet Thanagar – which explains her ability to grow wings. Essentially, she’s both Kendra and the previous Hawkgirl, Shayera, combined. This naturally leads to the question of whether she’ll form a romantic relationship with John Stewart (Green Lantern). Many fans anticipate seeing them paired up in a film, and given James Gunn’s fondness for the DC animated universe, it seems likely the DCU’s Justice League will draw inspiration from the animated series. While the new films won’t perfectly mirror the comics and cartoons, Isabela Merced and Aaron Pierre have the potential to become a memorable superhero couple on the big screen. We’ll see how it all unfolds when Man of Tomorrow is released next year.
