Lewis Hamilton, seven-time Formula 1 champion, expressed a preference for a measured approach when considering a follow-up to the recently successful F1 film, which saw a blockbuster opening weekend. Speaking to journalists on July 3rd, prior to the British Grand Prix, Hamilton emphasized his desire not to rush into another movie project.
In its debut weekend, the movie titled F1, featuring Brad Pitt reprising his role as a veteran driver attempting a comeback, raked in an impressive $55.6 million in North America and $144 million worldwide. These figures make it Apple’s biggest box office opening so far, as per the studio statistics released on Sunday.
Hamilton says now is not the time for a sequel
Hamilton stated that since they’ve recently completed the project, a sequel might not be what they desire at the moment. He emphasized the extensive work involved in the production, which spanned over four years. “It demanded a great deal of energy,” he added, “especially for our director, Joseph Kosinski. It means sacrificing time with family and loved ones, and sometimes it needs to rest and be appreciated.
The Ferrari driver expressed his opinion that making another movie too quickly might compromise the quality: “I believe rushing into making a sequel could be detrimental,” he stated. “Typically, sequels are inferior, so there’s no need to rush it. If we do decide to make a sequel, I would suggest taking our time to ensure it surpasses the original.
Here’s why Hamilton wants a ‘Debrief’ like F1
Lewis Hamilton is looking to translate racing insights into filmmaking as well. He mentioned requesting a post-mortem analysis on the Formula 1 film, similar to how teams assess performances after each race. “Let’s discuss what we accomplished and where we could improve,” he said. “I’m not sure if it’s done in the movie industry, but it’s definitely something I’ve picked up from my racing experience.
The impressive earnings at the box office for the F1 movie demonstrate the eager desire among fans to witness the thrilling world of racing on the silver screen. With a prominent figure like Brad Pitt and Hamilton working behind the scenes, it was easier to attract a large audience. Additionally, the movie’s success underscores Apple’s increasing efforts to become a significant player in major film productions.
Although some enthusiasts might be eager for a follow-up, Hamilton advocates taking time to ensure perfection instead. For the moment, he advises fans to savor their previous work rather than rushing into thoughts of what’s to come next.
