Jiminy Glick might be someone we’re fond of, but it’s important to remember he’s an imaginary creation brought to life by the talented Martin Short on screen. He showcased his portrayal of the character in Primetime Glick, a TV series that aired from 2001 to 2003, and also in the 2004 movie Jiminy Glick in Lalawood.
Speaking about Jiminy Glick’s origins, Martin Short has acknowledged Skip E. Lowe as a significant influence in shaping the character. As for Jiminy Glick himself, he was born Malcolm Glickman on March 12, 1948, and was the middle child among Omar and Isabella Glickman’s ten children. While the exact location of his birth is debated, it’s been reported to be in places like Akron, Ohio; Omaha, Nebraska; or Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Glick, who tended to spend time alone, identified as both Tibetan and American. From an early age, he endured teasing due to his weight issues. According to the fictional account of his life, he was frequently unwell, with medical professionals suggesting that a Tonka truck might have been lodged in his small intestine.
It’s worth noting that Jiminy Glick made an appearance in Martin Short’s Broadway production titled “Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me.” Notably, this character initially appeared as a recurring role on “The Martin Short Show.
In the previously mentioned program, Glick served as a TV talk-show host, frequently based in Hollywood, but surprisingly uninformed about contemporary popular culture and latest entertainment headlines.
In Primetime Glick, the character was accompanied by Michael McKean’s character, Adrian Van Voorhees, who bore a strong resemblance to Lawrence Welk. Known for performing on a full classical harp and leading a band of immigrants, Adrian was also the central figure in the movie Jiminy Glick in Lalawood, where he played the role of Jiminy Glick.
Furthermore, Martin Short played the character of Glick for almost an entire week on Whoopi Goldberg’s version of Hollywood Squares.
