As a devoted fan who has witnessed J-Lo and Bennifer’s rollercoaster romance for nearly two decades now, I can’t help but feel a tinge of sadness as I read about their latest split. It seems like every time they take a step forward, fate cruelly pulls them back. Yet, I’ve seen J-Lo weather the storm many times before and emerge stronger each time.
After several months of rumors about their separation, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck ended their relationship when Lopez filed for divorce, a move reportedly made with a heavy heart but one that she is now coping with as best she can, according to sources. A source close to the situation told PEOPLE that Lopez appears to be in good spirits weeks after filing for divorce and seemed relieved following the filing.
“It has been extremely challenging for her since Ben decided to leave their marriage and go his own way, abandoning her. The source also mentioned that Lopez didn’t want a divorce but was trying to find a solution. However, the wait has been excruciatingly painful for her. The source further disclosed that Lopez’s friends and relatives are backing her choice and she is enveloped in love and encouragement. They believe she will overcome this, as she always does.”
She initiated a divorce proceeding against Affleck in the Los Angeles County Superior Court without legal representation. According to the court documents, she cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the divorce and specified April 26 as the separation date. The papers also indicated that she declined to provide spousal support for Affleck and requested to remove his surname from hers in the divorce petition.
Instead of filing for divorce with no attorney present, it seemed uncommon and suggested a strong desire to finalize the proceedings quickly. As Marilyn Chinitz, a matrimonial partner at Blank Rome LLP (not associated with the case), stated, “It appears she was eager to wrap things up, showing signs of reluctance and indecision in the process.”
She added that Lopez filing for divorce alone was a gesture to show that she was ready to “move forward” and get the formalities done on her own. The couple always had a rocky relationship since they first started dating after meeting on the sets of Gigli in 2003.
2004 marked the end of their engagement after it was postponed that same year. However, they rekindled their relationship in April 2021, causing many to be smitten. Regrettably, this reconciliation didn’t last long. Despite their personal issues, they continue to work together professionally, with an upcoming drama called “Unstoppable” scheduled for premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6.
