As a longtime admirer of both the Chronicles of Narnia series and the cinematic artistry of directors like Greta Gerwig, I find myself torn between excitement for the upcoming reboot and a sense of melancholy. Having grown up with the original adaptations, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as I envision this new take on a world that has held such a profound impact on my childhood imagination.
According to reports, Greta Gerwig, the director of Barbie, seems disappointed about Netflix’s plan for a streaming debut of the Narnia reboot series. Instead, she advocates for a traditional theater release. Despite her suggestions to Netflix, they chose not to alter their release approach.
The beloved series “The Chronicles of Narnia,” inspired by C.S. Lewis’ timeless novels, began with “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” in 1950 and continued through six subsequent books. Various small-screen adaptations have been made over the years. In 2005, the franchise experienced its first big-screen adaptation, which was followed by two more films: “Prince Caspian” in 2008 and “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” in 2010, marking the conclusion of the film series.
In a chat with Bleeding Cool, William Moseley – best known for playing Peter Pevensie in all the The Chronicles of Narnia movies – expressed his dissatisfaction about the direction the series was taking. When discussing Netflix’s upcoming film by Gerwig, which will allegedly refresh and restart the franchise, he confessed that he feels sad about no longer being a part of it.
He shared that he’s no longer connected with that specific realm, and at times, it brings him a sense of melancholy since he holds a deep affection for the Narnia universe. Yet, he expresses excitement about the prospect of visiting the movie sets to observe the construction process. In an interview with Screen Rant, he admitted that if given the chance, he would eagerly join the film production without hesitation.
It appears his tenure with the franchise has come to an end, as expressed by him: “I don’t think there’s a need for me to be asked about it, but if I am, then great.” Interestingly, in July 2023, news emerged that Gerwig would pen and direct Netflix’s eagerly awaited reboot of The Chronicles of Narnia.
When asked by Collider, the director of Little Women clarified her earlier statement of feeling “scared” about leading the fantasy-adventure series. She explained, “Being scared is usually a positive sign for me.” She further stated, “It’s an extraordinary opportunity. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
The untitled Chronicles of Narnia reboot is expected to arrive on the streaming platform in 2025.
