Is Doug Liman Open To Direct A Road House Sequel? Here’s What Director Has To Say

As a long-time fan of Doug Liman‘s work, I must say that his approach to filmmaking has always been refreshing and unpredictable. With Road House, he not only took a classic action flick and gave it a modern twist but also showcased Jake Gyllenhaal in a way we hadn’t seen him before.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s film Road House has enjoyed some success, but it’s unclear if director Doug Liman will be involved in a sequel. The sequel was announced on Amazon Prime Video in May, just two months after the original movie premiered there. While Gyllenhaal is set to reprise his role as UFC middleweight fighter Elwood Dalton, Liman has not yet confirmed if he’ll direct the second film as well.

Doug Liman on if he will direct the Road House sequel

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Director Liman shared that although he hadn’t directed a sequel before, he takes great pride in his work on Road House and the unique character he developed alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. “Jake typically doesn’t portray such characters,” Liman notes, adding that he enjoys featuring actors in unconventional roles in his films. To illustrate this, he points to Matt Damon in a comedic role and Casey Affleck in a commercial film, both of whom are set to appear in the upcoming project.

In “Road House,” recognizing Jake as a successful leading man in a major, box-office hit movie, he added, it was simply enjoyable. He also acknowledged his friendship with the actor from “The Prisoner.” Although he’s unsure if others could replicate this film, Liman admitted that he can’t definitively say whether he’ll be back to direct the next big project.

What is Road House About?

In the 2024 reboot of the 1989 film Road House, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Dalton, we find him leaving UFC following a harrowing event in the ring. He then accepts a position as a bouncer at a roadhouse in Glass Keys, offered by the owner Frankie, who’s determined to protect her establishment from impending danger. A menacing gang is intent on demolishing the roadhouse to construct something new, and it falls upon Dalton to handle the threats. Initially struggling with his job, he encounters another challenge that brings out his true potential.

Famously, Liman resisted when the release of this movie, originally set for a cinema premiere, was moved to Amazon Prime Video for its debut instead. At first, he declined to attend the premiere following the company’s decision, but later changed his mind and watched it in the audience. This change occurred after MGM, the studio producing the film, was bought by Amazon.
