Is it possible that the “Star Wars” franchise is on the market? A financial source alleges that Disney has been trying to sell it for several months, but hasn’t found a suitable buyer yet.
In 2023, a rumor circulated about Disney CEO Bob Iger allegedly imposing restrictions on Kathleen Kennedy and the Star Wars franchise. It was also suggested that he wanted to sell Star Wars while retaining Marvel.
What does the rumor say?
The information originates from Film Threat’s Chris Gore, who previously disclosed Marvel’s dismissal of senior producers. As reported by Gore, an unnamed financial source informed him that Disney has discreetly been seeking buyers for Star Wars over the past few months, but so far, no potential buyers have emerged.
According to Gore (via That Park Place), this information comes from a friend who doesn’t fit into the categories of tech enthusiasts, YouTubers, or media professionals. Instead, this friend operates in the financial world. For the past seven months, they have been exploring the possibility of selling Star Wars.
Gore added, “They have been shopping it for seven months and can’t find a buyer.”
Is Disney really selling Star Wars?
It seems like there might be a potential sale of the Star Wars franchise, given Kathleen Kennedy’s resignation and the absence of significant Star Wars movies currently in production by Disney.
Kathleen Kennedy confirmed an announcement is coming soon.
Right now, I’m thrilled to know that only Lucasfilm is planning to release “The Mandalorian and Grogu” in the foreseeable future. As for new movies, unfortunately, there’s no active production going on. It’s been six long years since we last saw a fresh Star Wars movie hit the screens.
On the Disney+ side of Star Wars television series, the show Andor is set to premiere in April. Reports suggest that Season 2 of Ahsoka is currently being developed but has yet to announce a release date. There are even whispers that it might not have a Season 3 and could potentially be canceled. Much like the movies, it seems there are no new Star Wars TV shows in active production at this time. It’s worth mentioning that both Skeleton Crew and The Acolyte have recently struggled on Disney+.
The coincidence is striking, as the timeline aligns with Bob Iger’s departure from Disney in 2026, a fact he himself acknowledged that Disney’s streaming service has been losing money for the company.
Who could buy Star Wars?
In 2012, Disney acquired Lucasfilm (including Star Wars) from George Lucas for approximately $4 billion. Given current market trends, it’s plausible that the value of that deal would be significantly greater today.
It seems plausible that it’s mainly large technology corporations who might acquire Star Wars, such as Amazon, Apple, Comcast, or Netflix.
There’s been chatter and I’ve received intel from my Comic-Con contacts that Apple might consider purchasing Disney. Additionally, it’s been suggested that Comcast (Universal) could be interested in Warner Bros. Discovery, possibly to add Star Wars to their Universal Studios theme park offerings. Amazon, with its seemingly infinite funds, and the top streamer, Netflix, could also be eyeing Star Wars as a way to boost their streaming services like Prime Video and Netflix respectively.
It seems that according to what’s being discussed in Hollywood, it’s possible that all the film studios might be struggling financially, and major tech firms could potentially acquire them at a very low cost.
An alternative scenario could be that Disney grants the Star Wars franchise to others for distribution, allowing them to avoid expenses and manufacturing duties, yet maintaining control over its ownership rights.
Nobody wants Star Wars?
If Disney is really trying to sell Star Wars, why hasn’t anyone bought it?
As per Chris Gore’s perspective, it appears that Star Wars and Indiana Jones have lost their appeal to many. The reason, quite evidently, is that Kathleen Kennedy’s leadership at Star Wars and Lucasfilm has led these franchises to decline.
Many potential buyers might find themselves rolling their eyes at the thought of buying Star Wars for billions, as they feel that fans no longer have much interest in the intellectual property (IP). Currently, it seems that the market for consumer products and merchandise related to Star Wars is struggling. However, I suspect that if the price were reasonable, someone would snap it up immediately. But given Disney’s history of acquisitions, they are likely asking for at least twice as much as they paid, possibly even more.
