Doctor Who, a widely praised series, has built its own dedicated fanbase. However, during a gathering of this community at the Marriott Hotel in Los Angeles, representatives from Disney were conspicuously missing.
Back in 2022, the studio I’m referring to acquired the worldwide distribution rights for the show. Yet, it seems conspicuously absent, even during the gathering for dedicated fans known as Whovians, where BBC producers and executives were present.
Lately, the series introduced several characters that left longtime fans of Doctor Who feeling displeased. Among them was the disliked villain, Maestro, and the controversial figure of a pregnant man, who received widespread criticism.
The criticism that Disney was overly progressive may be shifting, given the evolving policies under the current U.S. administration. According to MailOnline, Disney appears to have relaxed its internal policies concerning diversity, equity, and inclusion since Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
Previously, Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, stated that their role wasn’t about promoting any particular viewpoint. Yet, some fans express opinions that contradict this perspective.
Currently, there’s no word from Disney regarding the future of Doctor Who, according to what BBC sources have shared. They won’t make a decision until after the current season has ended and they’ve analyzed the viewership numbers.
Conversely, the BBC is also uncertain about the show’s continuation unless Disney guarantees its financial support.
According to an article on MailOnline, a BBC representative mentioned that “Doctor Who” hasn’t been cancelled. Yet, the same report seems to imply that we might be looking at an extended hiatus instead.
According to an inside source, it appears that the series will soon go on an extended hiatus. This could potentially occur following the release of the upcoming season.
