Lynne Ramsay’s latest movie, titled “Die, My Love,” has been generating a lot of buzz at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. This thought-provoking film, featuring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, elicited strong responses during its premiere at the Lumière Theatre. However, Ramsay suggests that some viewers might be misunderstanding its true essence.
In a heartfelt conversation with Elvis Mitchell at Cannes, I shared my thoughts on postpartum experiences, saying, “This journey is far from the glamorous portrayals often depicted; it’s more about the complexities that arise in relationships, love, and intimacy after having a child, as well as dealing with creative blocks.
According to the 2017 novel “Die, My Love” by Ariana Harwicz, the story revolves around a young couple who leave bustling New York City behind in pursuit of tranquility in rural Montana. However, their deep-rooted passion is put to the test following the arrival of their child, causing significant strain on their relationship.
Jennifer Lawrence, via her production company Excellent Cadaver, showed great enthusiasm to collaborate with Ramsay. Ramsay shared that Lawrence herself had communicated her eagerness for the project.
Ramsay expressed, “Instead of discussing this as ‘Die, My Love,’ she suggested, to which I replied that I’m not interested in creating a story like ‘We Need to Talk About Kevin.’ I prefer something more uplifting and less heavy-hearted because it’s easier for people to categorize me.
At first uncertain, Ramsay ultimately penned an initial version and discovered herself captivated by the endeavor. Additionally, the main cast features LaKeith Stanfield, Sissy Spacek, and Nick Nolte.
Furthermore, the excitement continues as Die, My Love was purchased by Mubi in a whopping USD 24 million deal, making it the largest transaction at this year’s festival. In an exciting move, Mubi has pledged to screen the film on a grand scale, with a theatrical release scheduled on approximately 1,500 screens for a span of 45 days.
The broadcaster or provider gained access permissions for regions such as North America, Latin America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Turkey, India, Australia, and New Zealand.
The movie was orchestrated by Ramsay, who jointly penned the script with Enda Walsh and Alice Birch. It was collectively brought to life by Lawrence and Justine Ciarrocchi, Martin Scorsese, Andrea Calderwood, as well as Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill, and Thad Luckinbill from Black Label Media – these individuals not only produced it but also funded the production of the film.
