Is ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Starting a New Trend that Could Undermine the MCU?

As a long-time Marvel fan who has witnessed the rise of the MCU from its humble beginnings to the behemoth it is today, I can’t help but feel a tad disheartened by some recent decisions regarding beloved characters and iconic moments.

Starting in 2008 with the release of Iron Man, Marvel unveiled what would later become known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Back then, few could imagine that this cinematic venture would grow to the magnitude it holds today – one of the most extensive single-story film franchises globally and a significant endeavor in the grand scheme of cinema. While it’s not flawless, its impact on film history is undeniable.

Given those developments, numerous scenes from these films are likely to stay etched in our memories for a long time. Lately, we’ve shared that Kevin Feige’s decision to reprise Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in the joint production of Deadpool & Wolverine, along with bringing Robert Downey Jr. back to the MCU as Victor Von Doom, who will be the primary antagonist in the upcoming Avengers movies, has sparked controversy among some fans and potentially diminished the emotional resonance of certain moments.

In the film “Logan,” Deadpool and Wolverine caused quite a stir, but let’s not forget that wasn’t the only instance of mockery in the movie. A well-known scene from “Avengers: Endgame” was also spoofed, and if you observe closely, there might be a pattern emerging which, if continued, could potentially weaken the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it in the future.

Regarding Wolverine, it seems fans are referencing the ending of the critically-acclaimed film “Logan”, which served as a conclusion to Wolverine’s heroic journey within the X-Men series. In this movie, Wolverine experiences a heart-wrenching yet brave demise, symbolizing the close of that specific part of his story. Despite his appearance in “Deadpool & Wolverine” being a notable event, some fans felt that Feige’s decision to include him in this way diminished the emotional and epic conclusion portrayed in Logan.

Regarding Robert Downey Jr.’s (RDJ) emotional scene in the MCU, it’s no secret that his self-sacrificing act as Iron Man in “Endgame” left a lasting impact. By giving up his life to save the world, RDJ ensured Iron Man’s immortality in the hearts of fans, and tears were shed by many. However, there’s uncertainty about how Marvel will handle Doctor Doom in future projects, and some think that Kevin Feige’s decision to recast Iron Man was a questionable choice.

However, it’s worth noting that a scene in the film Deadpool & Wolverine has drawn some criticism from fans. They argue that a joke about the iconic “Avengers Assemble” line from Endgame, which is known for its epic impact, weakened the moment. In the movie, Chris Evans as Johnny Storm seems ready to activate his powers, but Deadpool anticipates him to utter the Avengers phrase, which unfortunately doesn’t occur.

It appears that Marvel might be creating a new pattern in their storytelling, one that could potentially diminish some of the franchise’s most iconic scenes. This pattern either recontextualizes these moments or satirizes them. For instance, the handling of Uncle Ben’s famous “With great power comes great responsibility” line in the Spider-Man Home trilogy was questionable. Tony Stark’s legacy is secure for now, but we’ll have to wait and see how Marvel handles Robert Downey Jr.’s return and its impact on the memorable Avengers scene.
