The original film was nothing short of a cinematic masterpiece, with its vibrant colors, witty dialogues, and star-studded cast.
Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are currently brainstorming fresh plotlines for a potential sequel to the Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie. The highly anticipated follow-up, which made waves with its pink-hued world in 2023 and grossed an impressive 1.4 billion USD at the box office, is already in the early stages of production.
According to both Warner Bros. and Mattel, the filmmakers, any potential follow-up movie could only be based on ideas inspired by the books. However, recent reports suggest that directors Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach have recently pitched an idea to the studio for a new project. At this early stage, discussions are underway regarding contracts and scheduling.
In my perspective as an ardent admirer, Barbie 2 wasn’t a foregone conclusion, even with its impressive box office performance and wide appeal. Both Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach were firm that a sequel would only materialize if we had a compelling narrative. At the Time’s Women of the Year event in March 2024, Gerwig herself expressed her passion for storytelling that resonates deeply.
Previously, Gerwig shared with People that she envisions her movie as the start of various Barbie film series. Regarding a potential sequel, she mentioned, “There’s an atmosphere, a wit, and a delightfulness in it. Of course, Barbie Land is visually stunning. I’d love to revisit this world again.
