Today, March 13th, Adolescence made its debut on Netflix and it’s been generating quite the excitement! With the number of initial views, it seems this dramatic series is on the verge of exploding in popularity. At its core, Adolescence centers around a 13-year-old boy named Jamie Miller, portrayed by Owen Cooper, who finds himself accused of murdering another adolescent girl.
As a devoted follower, I find myself drawn to a story that unfolds in the wake of a tragic incident involving a 13-year-old. The official summary goes, “In this narrative, we delve into the mystery surrounding a 13-year-old who stands accused of murdering a schoolmate. As his family, therapist, and the lead detective grapple with understanding the truth behind the event, they are all left questioning the circumstances.
However, while the overall plot of the series might not be a direct account of actual events, Stephen Graham’s character, Eddie Miller, is said to be inspired by real-life incidents involving knife crime in the United Kingdom.
The actor from “The Boiling Point,” speaking to the outlet, mentioned an event where a young boy [reportedly] attacked a girl with a knife. He was taken aback by the news and the subsequent series of such violent incidents. He expressed his desire to bring attention to this issue and question, “Why is this kind of violence occurring today?” he said further.
The performer shared that they had two potential storylines in mind – one focusing on gangs and violence involving knives, and another revolving around a child who struggles with an alcoholic parent and physical abuse. However, they decided to concentrate more on exploring the dynamics within a family instead.
“And what’s happening here is an ordinary family’s worst nightmare,” he added.
The show is uniquely structured to immediately captivate viewers, using one long, uninterrupted take per episode that simulates a real-time account of events. The narrative focuses on Graham, Miller’s father, who is on a quest to uncover the truth behind the unfortunate incident.
Graham, with an extensive career spanning multiple notable roles such as those in Gangs of New York, This Is England, Boardwalk Empire, and Line of Duty, among others, could be seen as a seasoned actor. Conversely, Owen makes his acting debut by portraying the character of the accused teen murderer.
Adolescence is now streaming on Netflix.
