As someone who has quoted this movie more times than I can count and even named my first-born after Ted’s quirky brother, I was overjoyed at the prospect of revisiting this beloved comedy. Alas, it seems that the stars have not aligned for a sequel, at least not yet.

Initially, enthusiasts of the 1998 hit comedy “There’s Something About Mary” were momentarily hopeful about a possible sequel following a widely shared Facebook post suggesting its production. However, it has been clarified that the post was meant to be humorous and no actual sequel is being produced at this time.

On November 25, 2024, an imposter Facebook account named YODA BBY ABY posted about a supposed sequel called “There’s Still Something About Mary,” due out in March 2025. The phony plot summary depicted Ted (played by Ben Stiller) and Mary (Cameron Diaz), who were having difficulties in their 25-year marriage, being reunited comically via a compatibility matching app after encountering troubles.

As an ardent admirer, I was captivated by the suggestion, but upon closer examination, I discovered it was a work of satire. The parody account openly declared itself as “100% satire and fake,” leaving me confident that no sequel is in development.

Although it may seem surprising, the concept of a sequel isn’t entirely fresh. During an interview with Comic Book in March 2024, co-director Peter Farrelly disclosed that there had been initial discussions about a follow-up, following the original’s box office triumph. Tentatively named “There’s Something Else About Mary”, this sequel would have delved into Mary’s backstory and incorporated an unexpected, daring twist. However, the project was eventually abandoned as the creators believed that the story had reached its conclusion.

Under the guidance of directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly, “There’s Something About Mary” gained significant cultural impact upon its debut on July 15, 1998. In this film, Cameron Diaz portrays Mary Jensen while Ben Stiller steps into the role of Ted. Notable performances were also delivered by Matt Dillon, Chris Elliott, and Lee Evans.
