‘Invincible’ Creator Robert Kirkman Reveals the State of the Announced Live-Action Adaptation

As a die-hard fan of both comics and animated series, I can confidently say that the success of Invincible has been nothing short of exhilarating. The way Robert Kirkman has managed to redefine the superhero genre while keeping a tongue-in-cheek approach is simply brilliant.

Just like “The Boys”, Amazon’s animated version of the “Invincible” comic book series has also gained massive popularity for the company. This animated take on a well-known comic provides us with a fresh angle on the superhero genre, offering something different from what we’re accustomed to, while at the same time poking fun at traditional American superhero comics.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but marvel at how an animated series has managed to capture my attention and countless others, climbing its way up Amazon’s rankings of popular programs. It’s no small feat, but it’s achieved this by drawing in a sizable audience and fostering a passionate, involved fandom. As a result, it stands as one of the most gripping and widely-watched TV shows currently airing.

Despite the animated show continuing its progression, some fans are curious about the status of the live-action version that was initially announced by The Hollywood Reporter in 2017. Although no official news has been shared, series creator Robert Kirkman has provided additional details on the projects, suggesting that it is still in development!

According to our pals over at The Direct, they’ve shared some insights from their conversation with Kirkman during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, and here’s a glimpse into what we learned regarding the status of the live-action movie.

…”The project is currently under construction. We’re collaborating with Universal on it. The series has been doing exceptionally well, which is why we believe the movie needs to be flawless. Consequently, it requires considerable time and effort to ensure all aspects are perfectly aligned and functioning smoothly. As a result, the development process has been ongoing for some time now, and I expect it will continue for a while longer.”

Additionally, he noted the challenge of making the film distinct from the animated show while still remaining faithful to the source material. He also discussed the complexities involved in transitioning a single narrative into various forms of media.

“To ensure the spin-off series offers a unique viewing experience while staying true to ‘Invincible’, it needs to carve its own identity. It should stand independently and not rely on the original show. This is something we’re putting a lot of effort into. I believe when it’s released, it will be quite intriguing.”

“It seems challenging, as we need to create not just a comic, but also an animated series and a movie. Each one needs to offer a unique experience while possibly retelling or presenting a new story.”

When inquired about the release date for the movie, he offered us an amusing and thought-provoking response that might include a clue.

We’re attempting to solve such challenges, and the goal is not just to match the quality of the show, but to surpass it in many aspects. It’s challenging to captivate audiences in theaters with a movie, and it’s a gradual process. However, we have a strong team working on it, and I believe we’re aiming to create something quite impressive. The timeline might be long enough for Timothée Chalamet to portray Omni-Man.

Ultimately, he was queried regarding the challenges involved in converting a sprawling comic book into a film, given its inherent production constraints.

The filmmaking journey is becoming increasingly compact, which can be exasperating at certain moments, but it’s also an exciting test. On the other hand, for us, creating the animated series feels like an expansion. I view it as a broader scope compared to the comic books, as we incorporate more scenes, inject more emotion, have more dialogue exchanges, and delve deeper into character growth.

It’s clear that this is excellent news since Kirkman appears to be considering the project, potentially leading to a quality adaptation. However, there may be a delay before anything actually materializes.
