Insider Reports Reveal How Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Will Differ Dramatically from Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel’

As a die-hard fan who has witnessed the rollercoaster ride that is DC’s cinematic journey, I can confidently say that the upcoming Superman film under James Gunn’s helm feels like a breath of fresh air. After years of anticipation and countless disappointments, it seems we are finally on the brink of a new era for our beloved Man of Steel.

For over a year now, it’s been well-known that James Gunn is crafting his own cinematic universe to replace the failed DCEU. Initially, an ambitious effort to replicate the MCU’s success, the DCEU faced more challenges than anticipated, leading to a strategic shift with Gunn and Peter Safran appointed as co-CEOs of DC Studios.

Though the official start of the DC Universe (DCU) is yet to come, it technically kicks off with the December release of ‘Creature Commandos’. Nonetheless, Gunn and Safran have highlighted that the real commencement of the DCU will be on July 11, 2025, with the debut of ‘Superman’.

Filming for the movie kicked off on February 29, 2024, in the Adventdalen valley of Svalbard, Norway, which coincides with Superman’s birthdate as per his canon. Following this, production moved to Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia from March 8, 2024, and was set to last until August 2, 2024. Extra scenes were shot in Cleveland and Cincinnati, Ohio between April 1 and August 23, with the Cleveland sequences being filmed from June 24 to July 16, and Cincinnati wrapping up on July 30, 2024.

During this timeframe, several leaked scenes popped up, drawing a mix of accolades and criticisms from fans. Some admired the updates, while others panned the costumes for looking cheap. However, with minimal information about the movie, recent whispers from within the industry have sparked enthusiasm. According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, the film is said to be “outstanding” and significantly distinct from Zack Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel.’

In a marked departure from the gritty realism of Man of Steel, Superman is portrayed as extraordinary. This new take delves deeply into science fiction and fantasy, offering a world distinctly separate from our own and detached from the DCEU. The narrative explores how the presence of heroes over time has influenced this universe’s history and molded the DCU. In comparison to Marvel’s linear storytelling, the DCU will present numerous projects set across diverse timelines, echoing the multifaceted approach of Star Wars.

According to Richtman’s statements, his ideas align with previous rumors indicating that Gunn intends to portray Superman in a cheerful and timeless manner, similar to the Christopher Reeve movies.
