Inside Out 3: Will There Be a Third Movie? Plans Explored

As a lifelong Pixar enthusiast who grew up with the original Inside Out, I can confidently say that the latest sequel has surpassed all my expectations. The way Riley’s emotional journey continues to evolve as she navigates the complexities of high school is both heartwarming and relatable. It’s like Pixar has been reading my diary!

Anticipation runs high for what’s next in the Inside Out series, following the massive success of Inside Out 2. The recent sequel to the 2015 blockbuster Inside Out carries on Riley’s emotional tale as she navigates her way through adolescence. As Riley prepares for high school, fresh emotions like Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui emerge, mirroring the intensifying social challenges she encounters. This film has already smashed box office records, making it the top-grossing movie of the year thus far, demonstrating that this franchise remains a captivating force for audiences.

Inside Out 3: a sequel is almost inevitable

Currently, there hasn’t been an official confirmation about Inside Out 3. However, given hints from Pixar’s chief creative officer Pete Docter, a follow-up sequel seems more likely than not. During a conversation with Fandango, Docter suggested that his studio is considering potential ideas for where the story could continue, as there are still many unexplored aspects in this vibrant, imaginative world. At present, they are in a stage similar to what followed the first Inside Out, having numerous concepts but not yet deciding on a clear direction.

As an over-the-moon admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement about Doctor’s hints regarding a possible third installment in the Inside Out series. He’s eager to delve deeper into this captivating universe he’s crafted, breathing life into ideas initially left untouched from both Inside Out and its sequel. These concepts, though set aside for thematic reasons in previous films, still hold immense potential for future storytelling.

Doctor mentioned, “It’d be wonderful if it seemed like we only discovered a tiny fraction of the infinite universe, and the rest is yet unexplored. That means there’s plenty left to discover, many ideas from the first or second film that didn’t quite fit the narrative or theme-wise; we have a rich playground to work with.”

There’s not just Pixar eagerly awaiting a third Inside Out movie. When Disney CEO Bob Iger was questioned about it on Good Morning America, his enthusiasm was palpable. Although he didn’t explicitly confirm it, his response that he “would love” for it to happen certainly piqued interest among fans.

Director Kelsey Mann, overseeing Inside Out 2, is eager to revisit and explore further the whimsical universe of the film. In an interview with ComicBook, Mann hinted at various unexplored creative paths available for the franchise. “I’m fond of this realm,” said Mann, “It offers such a wonderful playground, and concepts simply emerge while exploring this world, both for locales and characters.” He mentioned that numerous ideas, particularly those from the latest movie, were set aside because they didn’t quite fit with the narrative at hand, but he hopes they can be utilized in the future.

One of those ideas was a place called “Procrastination Land,” a theme park forever under construction and never ready to open. Mann called it a funny concept that really spoke to his teenage years. “It had a big sign that said, ‘Procrastination Land,’ with ‘Coming Soon’ on it. Anger was frustrated and kept asking, ‘When are they gonna start building that place?!!’ It’s a funny idea, and it didn’t fit this story, but I believe it has to be used somehow in the future.”

Following the massive success of Inside Out 2, it seems all but certain that we’ll see a sequel. With an initial budget of $200 million, this movie is projected to earn between $140 million and $150 million during its opening weekend—which would make it Pixar’s second-largest opening weekend ever. This already puts it ahead of the original by at least $50 million in its first week, and sets the stage for an even more lucrative run at the box office. With ease, it could surpass the original film’s total earnings of $857.6 million, virtually ensuring a third installment.

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but marvel at the success of the Inside Out franchise amidst this summer’s lackluster movie lineup. Yet, beyond the impressive box office figures, it’s the sheer potential of this idea that truly captivates me. With Riley maturing and her emotions evolving along with her, we’re in for a never-ending treasure trove of stories. Whether she’s off to college or delves deeper into high school—especially if she secures a scholarship like that hockey player did—the possibilities are boundless!

1. The conclusion of Inside Out 2 sets up numerous opportunities for delving deeper into Riley’s identity complexities. Joining the high school hockey team introduces fresh challenges, fear-fighting episodes, and maintaining connections with both old and new companions. Considering the various paths the narrative could take, it is evident that Mann harbors a strong eagerness to continue exploring Riley’s growth in Inside Out 3, potentially unveiling additional intricacies within this evolving character and her psyche.
