During a conversation, Tallman shared insights into her character Riley’s role in Inside Out 2, focusing on some intense, emotional hockey scenes. In these key moments of the movie, a new emotion called Anxiety becomes a powerful obstacle for Riley. Tallman discussed the difficulties she faced while recording this scene, drawing upon her personal struggles with anxiety. She also spoke about the challenges in portraying Anxiety authentically, tying it to her own real-life experience battling that emotion.

In her own words, the actress admitted that the hardest aspect of portraying Riley is when Anxiety takes control, as she personally grapples with anxiety issues. She confessed that she initially thought she should conceal this, but then she clarified that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious and emotional, as these feelings are part of life. A profound moment for Tallman occurred during the recording of the line “I’m not good enough” during Riley’s anxiety attack, which made her realize how frequently she criticizes herself. She went on to say that this scene was an enlightening experience and that many people struggle with self-doubt from time to time.

She discussed the challenge of portraying a panic attack, which she personally has gone through. This was a scene including heavy breathing and a deep emotional dive but in the end resulted beautifully in depicting such a relatable moment in many people’s lives. “So, recording the panic attack was definitely tricky because I have had my own panic attacks before,” she says. And she continued to tell how the movie also displayed that these episodes are temporary and it is perfectly okay to have them. “I think the panic attack turned out so beautiful and shows us that it’s okay to not be okay sometimes,” she added.

During a slight change in topic, Tallman expressed her strong interest in following more of Riley’s storyline and possibly hinted at the prospect of a third film. She suggested that love could prove an intriguing emotion for Riley to explore due to its far-reaching effects on various life aspects. Moreover, she voiced excitement about the possibility of a crossover with Monsters, Inc., which she felt would be fascinating. In essence, she mused, “Love, I think, because it has such wide-ranging implications and I believe it would be great to witness Riley’s love story unfold.”

She too wondered about which phase of Riley’s life would be featured next, suggesting that college and the journey towards adulthood would generate numerous plotlines. “Indeed, college age, moving into adulthood – it can be quite frightening at times, but it’s also incredibly exhilarating,” she commented. Noting that she was only 16 herself, the actress felt this storyline seemed particularly meaningful and relatable to many people.

First premiered in 2015, Inside Out captivated viewers through its imaginative portrayal of emotions – Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Anger, and Fear – as they journey inside the mind of young Riley, who has recently relocated to a new city. Approaching its ninth year, Inside Out 2 carries on from where it left off, introducing fresh characters such as Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment, adding complexity to Riley’s life as she navigates her teenage years. The sequel has proven itself successful, surpassing the record set by the 2012 classic The Avengers to claim a spot among the top ten highest-grossing films of all time.

With anticipation building among viewers for the third installment, Inside Out 2 continues to be a groundbreaking achievement in animation, leaving fans eager to discover what emotional journey awaits Riley next. The creativity and dedication of director Pete Docter ensures that this tale of emotion will captivate audiences like never before.
