Inside Jake Gyllenhaal’s Lavish Othello Dressing Room Featuring a USD 19K Chess Set and Luxury Furniture

Jake Gyllenhaal has turned his dressing room at Broadway’s Barrymore Theatre into a luxurious hideaway adorned with designer furniture, costly artwork, and a remarkable USD 19,000 chess set. The talented actor, who portrays the malevolent Iago in Othello, granted Architectural Digest an exclusive peek inside his private sanctuary backstage.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s dressing room was styled by Ruby Kean and Lisa Jones from Atelier LK, combining both retro and contemporary elements. The room showcases a modernist sofa valued at $9,000, a set of bentwood barrel chairs designed by Josef Hoffman worth $18,000, as well as an expensive 19th-century French coffee table priced at approximately $22,000.

A significant number of these pieces were obtained from Somerset House. Additionally, the actor from The Road House added artworks valued over $6,000 by Joel Tomlin to the collection.

In his stylish setup, the actor, renowned for his fondness of quality aesthetics, integrated a La Marzocco espresso machine worth $5,900 and individual coffee cups from the high-end brand Ginori 1735, priced at approximately $170 per piece. Given his role as an ambassador for the Italian porcelain company, it was fitting to incorporate this choice item into his personal space.

Additionally, lighting and ornamental details significantly contribute to the overall ambiance. A sophisticated pendant light costing USD 9,200 from Sophie Lou Jacobsen and an USD 8,600 floral-patterned mirror by the same designer add elegance to the space.

Among the noteworthy items found in Gyllenhaal’s private space is a custom-crafted chess set valued at $19,000, designed by Minjae Kim. This unique set is complemented by two chairs, one representing light and the other symbolizing darkness, which are reminiscent of the racial undertones in the story of Othello.

Jake Gyllenhaal recognized the profound significance in the design elements, commenting, “I wouldn’t dare to claim I’m a dramaturgist here, but I believe the materials they selected, both soft and hard, the balance between danger and comfort, all these contrasts perfectly align with the themes of Othello.

Although the set is luxurious, Gyllenhaal mentioned that Denzel Washington, portraying Othello, spends little time there. He explained, “Denzel has visited a few times, but since he’s the general, I often find myself in his room.” It appears that Washington prefers to have his own space prior to performances, making the elaborate dressing room more of a retreat for him.
