Up to now, it’s clear the movie takes place in an alternate world – a retro-futuristic depiction of New York City reminiscent of the 1960s. Director Matt Shakman has verified that the Fantastic Four will be well-established superheroes when the film begins, and they are the only ones with such powers in their universe.
Interestingly enough, spectators have picked up on something intriguing in the trailers. Certain shots depict Ben Grimm (The Thing) prior to acquiring his powers. This could indicate that the movie will delve into the team’s backstory, offering viewers a glimpse into their transformation into the Fantastic Four.
According to industry expert Alex Perez, during his monthly Q&A session, he shared some insights. He mentioned that in the upcoming series titled “First Steps“, we’ll discover how the Fantastic Four acquire their powers. Subsequently, a montage will depict them performing heroic deeds throughout the years. Notably, they are portrayed as the primary superhero team within their universe, and interestingly, they appear to be the only such team in that specific world.
Filming for the movie wrapped up in November 2024, followed by a few reshoots earlier this year. Now, the studio is gearing up to launch its promotional efforts since the movie is set to hit theaters on July 25, 2025. This film marks both the debut and the commencement of Phase Six within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
