‘Incredible Hulk’ Writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson Talks ‘Hellhunters,’ the New World War II Horror Series Starring Ghost Rider ’44 (with a Sneak Peek Inside the First Two Issues)

As a seasoned movie buff who has spent countless hours immersed in the rich tapestry of Marvel’s cinematic universe, I can confidently say that Phillip Kennedy Johnson‘s work on Ghost Rider ’44 and HELLHUNTERS is nothing short of extraordinary. His ability to delve into the darker corners of the Marvel Universe, weaving tales of horror and vengeance, is a testament to his unique storytelling prowess.

In a thrilling stint writing for The Incredible Hulk, author Philip Kennedy Johnson introduced readers to Sergeant Sal Romero – more famously known as Ghost Rider ’44! During the tumultuous period of World War II, this avenger imbued with vengeance battled alongside Marvel’s iconic figures such as Wolverine, Nick Fury, Peggy Carter, and Bucky Barnes on the battlefield.

Lately, Johnson collaborated with artist Adam Gorham to delve into the past of Ghost Rider ’44 in the series HELLHUNTERS. This 5-issue limited run transports readers to World War II, revealing the hidden narrative of a brave squad of Nazi-hunting superheroes spearheaded by Ghost Rider ’44. With the launch of the initial issue, Johnson expressed his views on HELLHUNTERS and how horror plays a role in the Marvel Universe.

Marvel: What’s it like to put a new spin on a classic character like Ghost Rider?

Ghost Rider is among Marvel’s enduring characters who can fit seamlessly into various scenarios or eras, and the World War II era seemed ideal for introducing a new Ghost Rider that had not been seen before.

In this conflict, one faction confronted forces that were truly evil in every sense… Abundant tales of unjust treatment and righteous retribution were ripe for the telling… Many of Marvel’s toughest, most hardened, merciless characters found themselves in the European Theater during this period… Furthermore, a motorcycle legendary for its toughness, the 1942 Harley-Davidson WLA, was also present. The Hellhunters are an exceptional team, one that complements each other perfectly, and Ghost Rider serves as the foundation of their formidable lineup.

Marvel: How does it feel to devote a significant amount of your work to a part of the Marvel Universe that is darker and more horror-influenced?

Kennedy Johnson expresses concern that his recent work might be perceived as only horror-focused, fearing being labeled as “the horror guy.” Yet, he admits he’s so immersed in the creative process, he’s hardly bothered by this potential stereotype. He believes comics are an ideal platform for horror stories and considers it a privilege to showcase this with some of the most iconic characters in the comic world. He assures us there’s more exciting work on the horizon.

Marvel: What sets HELLHUNTERS apart from your other Marvel work?

Kennedy Johnson: Among all the Marvel series I’ve written so far, others could have taken their places if not me. However, HELLHUNTERS is my unique Marvel series that wouldn’t be here without my involvement, fueled by an intense and somewhat unhealthy desire to narrate this specific story with these particular characters. Battling Nazis never goes out of style, but the timing for it seems exceptionally fitting now, and this creative team is undeniably the right choice for the task.
