‘I’m Passionate About…’: Cynthia Erivo Defends Calling Out Edited Wicked Poster

As an ardent fan of Cynthia Erivo and her extraordinary talent, I find myself deeply moved by her recent heartfelt explanation regarding her initial harsh reaction to the fan-made Wicked poster. As someone who has followed her journey from the critically acclaimed “The Color Purple” to her mesmerizing portrayal of Harriet Tubman in “Harriet,” I can truly understand her passionate attachment to Elphaba, the character she brought to life so beautifully in “Wicked.

Cynthia Erivo recently spoke out to clarify her earlier response towards a homemade poster depicting ‘Wicked’. This gifted performer shared her perspective and disclosed the reasons behind her strong reaction to the fan-altered artwork.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, the British actress expressed, “I feel deeply connected to this role and I believe the fans share that sentiment. For me, it was a heartfelt desire to shield young Elphaba,” when discussing her character from the musical fantasy film.

During the 2024 CFDA Fashion Awards red carpet on October 28, 2024, she later mentioned to a specific outlet that perhaps she should have contacted her friends instead of posting about the matter on social media first.

On October 16, the actress from Bad Times at the El Royale shared her feelings through Instagram Stories.

In the past, Erivo posted a widely popular image on TikTok that was created by fans. According to sources, this homemade poster aimed to replicate the famous, two-decade-old illustrated design from the original Broadway play.

Upon examining the picture, Erivo referred to it as “the most outlandishly provocative image I’ve come across.

In her words, she pointed out that the poster was not amusing at all and it belittled her.

In a more tribute-like manner than merely copying, the actress from The Outsider mentioned that removing her eyes in post-production left her feeling quite distressed, since it’s primarily the eyes that convey emotions and connect with the audience without using words.

Meanwhile, Cynthia Erivo’s co-star, Ariana Grande, in the movie Wicked had backed her up.

As I shared with Variety on October 19, 2024, I find that artificial intelligence can sometimes be a double-edged sword – powerful yet perplexing. While I see the potential in this innovative technology, I also worry about its propensity to overstep boundaries and potentially cause more harm than good.

Grande continued that she respects Erivo’s opinions, also stating that she loves her a lot.

Wicked is a movie directed by Jon M. Chu while being penned by Winnie Holzman as well as Dana Fox.

As a die-hard enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that rumors abound about a sequel for this phenomenal film! Interestingly, it seems to have its roots in a stage drama musical bearing the very same title.

Wicked will be out in theaters on November 22, 2024.
