As a lifestyle expert with years of experience navigating the complexities of celebrity relationships, it is my professional perspective that Jennifer Lopez‘s decision to file for divorce pro se is a bold move that speaks volumes about her strength and determination. She has shown resilience in the face of adversity, a trait that resonates deeply with me, having witnessed countless high-profile couples navigate similar challenges.
The latest news about Jennifer Lopez deciding to end her marriage with Ben Affleck has been making headlines in tabloids. Despite their efforts to save their failing relationship over the last few months, they have now decided to go their separate ways, according to sources from PEOPLE. It is reported that Lopez simply wanted to finalize the divorce and move forward, as confirmed by a legal expert interviewed by PEOPLE.
Back on August 20th, I, a devoted fan, found myself standing before the Los Angeles County Superior Court, without a legal representative by my side, to file for divorce from my beloved Ben Affleck. April 26, 2024, was the date I chose as our separation mark, though it’s hard to believe we’ll be apart that long. Our whirlwind romance began with a secretive Las Vegas wedding on July 16th, 2022, and August 20th held a special place in my heart as it marked the second anniversary of our formal wedding ceremony in Georgia – an unforgettable day filled with love and joy.
Marilyn Chinitz, a partner at Blank Rome LLP, talked about Jennifer Lopez choosing to file for divorce without a lawyer, which is called representing oneself or pro se. Chinitz suggested that Lopez might be rushing to end this part of her life swiftly.
It seems she probably felt the need to complete this task quickly. There were several moments of indecision and pauses, implying her determination: “I’m proceeding, I’m submitting, and I’m doing it independently,” Chinitz concluded.
Apart from the investigation, Chinitz expressed his belief that it would be quite uncommon if the couple didn’t have a premarital agreement, according to TMZ’s reports.
In simpler terms, Chinitz told PEOPLE that the reason people often don’t have a prenuptial agreement is because they’ve already transferred most of their possessions into trusts for their children, which means those assets wouldn’t be classified as shared property in case of a divorce.
Moving forward, we’ll observe Affleck’s reaction to the allegations. Moreover, it has been reported by PEOPLE that both Lopez and Affleck might be collaborating with a mediator in their case, as David Glass, a family law attorney based in California, suggests.
In simpler terms, I’d say, “When folks find themselves at an impasse and need a helping hand, they might bring in what I call a ‘neutral facilitator.’ This person, often an experienced attorney or former judge, doesn’t take sides but rather helps the parties involved to reach a mutually agreeable solution.”
The previous pair have a combined family consisting of Max and Emme, who are 16 and are Lopez’s twins with her former spouse Marc Anthony, along with Violet, aged 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12 – these being the children Affleck had with his ex-wife Jennifer Garner.
