Recently, Anthony Mackie used Instagram to clarify the response to his remarks concerning the symbolism of Captain America.
On his Instagram Story, Mackie expressed, “I want to make this clear: I’m incredibly proud to be an American, and being given the chance to embody a hero like Captain America is an unparalleled honor. I hold in high esteem everyone who protects and has protected our nation. Captain America embodies traits that resonate with people worldwide.
In an interview held in Rome during the promotion of “Captain America: Brave New World”, Mackie expressed his views on the character. He stated that Captain America embodies traits such as honor, dignity, and reliability; however, he cautioned against associating the term ‘America’ with these qualities. This statement ignited a discussion online, as some individuals questioned Mackie’s perspective regarding the superhero’s essence.
Widely-shared snippets from Mackie’s interview were found, with certain portions excluding his statement about Captain America not symbolizing America specifically. The official Marvel Italian social media platform primarily emphasized his characterization of Cap as a figure who is “reliable” and “trustworthy.

In “Brave New World”, set to release on Valentine’s Day, we find Sam Wilson embarking on his first solo adventure as Captain America, having assumed the role from Chris Evans’ character, Steve Rogers. This film is an extension of the storyline we saw in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”.
This movie boasts an impressive ensemble of actors like Harrison Ford, Rosa Salazar, Liv Tyler, Giancarlo Esposito, Danny Ramirez, and Shira Haas. Julius Onah is the director, while the screenplay was penned by Rob Edwards, Malcolm Spellman, and Dalan Musson.
In another conversation, Mackie expressed the significance of representation, stating, “I believe it’s just as significant for Black children to witness a Black Captain America as it is for white children. For me, it wasn’t about the character’s race but rather about their goodness and righteousness.” He added that his childhood idol was a green character, implying that in his view, the hero’s race didn’t matter; what mattered was their virtuous actions.
Anthony Mackie expresses that having a Black Captain America is equally significant for both Black and White children. As a child, his preferred superhero was green, emphasizing that it wasn’t about race but rather the character’s qualities that appealed to him.
