Iliza Shlesinger Compares Kissing Superman Actor to “Smooching a Honey Baked Ham” in New Movie

Iliza Shlesinger is known for being upfront, and she didn’t hold back when describing what it was like to kiss her co-star, Tom Welling, in her new movie, Chasing Summer. At the 2026 Sundance Film Festival premiere, the comedian jokingly shared a very honest review of their on-screen romance, noting the less-than-glamorous conditions of filming romantic scenes in the Missouri heat – all captured on video by Welling’s wife, Jessica Rose Lee Welling.

It was so funny on the red carpet! Shlesinger playfully apologized to Jessica about the kiss I had with her husband in the movie. I immediately joked, ‘Don’t worry, there’s no reason to be jealous!’ and then explained it was freezing during the shoot. I said he was super sweaty, and it felt more like kissing a Honey Baked Ham than anything else. It got a great laugh from both of them, which was a relief!

Jessica shared a playful back-and-forth with her husband on Instagram, poking fun at his review that mentioned a lot of sweating. She joked that it wasn’t surprising, since they filmed during a very humid summer in St. Louis. The premiere was a big event for Welling, as it was his first major red carpet appearance in five years after taking a break from the public eye.

Shlesinger reaches a new level in her career with Chasing Summer, a film where she both stars and wrote the script. Directed by Josephine Decker, the movie centers on Jamie, a woman who goes back to Texas after experiencing difficulties in her life and work. The project lets Shlesinger showcase a softer, more emotional side to her acting, while still keeping the clever humor her fans love from her stand-up routines.

Starting this year, Tom Welling is experiencing a career comeback while still valuing his private life outside of Los Angeles. After finishing his long-running role on Smallville in 2011, he relocated to a ranch in Northern California with his family to focus on raising and breeding horses. He’s now dividing his time between supporting his wife’s horse business and working on independent films, including the 2024 action movies Clear Cut and Mafia Wars.

Tom Welling continues to embrace his superhero past through his popular podcast, Talk Ville, which he co-hosts with former Smallville co-star Michael Rosenbaum. They’re rewatching every episode of the show, and fans who would love to see him back in the DC Universe are loving it.

David Corenswet is now the new Superman for the 2025 movie, but Tom Welling has said he’d be interested in playing Batman – an older, more experienced version – if a good role becomes available.

Iliza Shlesinger has been keeping busy with several projects. Her new essay collection, All Things Aside, was recently released and is gaining popularity for its relatable take on contemporary life. She’s balancing this with her comedy tour and a growing number of film roles.
