Yesterday, Elden Ring Nightreign, from FromSoftware, dropped an unexpected day one update, and as a gamer, I was pleasantly surprised to find balance changes tailored for its roguelike souls-inspired gameplay. The patch notes were typically succinct, but they’ve already revamped the single-player experience, hinting at another adjustment-packed update next week.
If you’re currently playing Nightreign on your own, here’s the gist: Many (if not all) merchants now stock a Wending Grace item which restores your full health when you perish during a night boss encounter. This feature is exclusive to single-player mode and allows you to carry two of these items at once. It’s recommended that you purchase one whenever you come across it.
Next week on Twitter, the Elden Ring official account unveiled two major updates coming our way. Firstly, each climax night boss will grant an additional free revive, reducing the impact of solo play’s common challenges such as lack of allies to bring you back when you fall, making mistakes severely punishing. Secondly, rune accumulation during solo gameplay will be faster compared to co-op, allowing for quicker progress in terms of clearing camps and leveling up on your own, much like a trio would.
Initially, the 1.01 update subtly enhanced solo gameplay compared to its problematic pre-release phase. Since there were no detailed patch notes available, I can’t pinpoint every adjustment made, but I am definitely dealing significantly more damage in single-player now than during the pre-launch period.
What stands out even more is the significant alteration of the Wending Grace, which is exceptionally scarce in cooperative gameplay and can be obtained exclusively from high-level bosses. In the pre-release version for single player, the merchant just before the Nightlord was the only one who always had a Wending Grace on hand.
Now it’s a festival of Wending Grace items for sale. If a merchant doesn’t offer at least one in single-player mode, it’s quite likely that most do – I’ve spotted them being sold at the settlement and fort merchants so far. This makes up for the absence of friends to revive you in solo play, and with the upcoming free revive feature in patch 1.02, we’ll have up to three opportunities to get back up and continue battling against Nightreign’s toughest bosses.
Nightreign remains more enjoyable in multiplayer, yet its single-player mode now seems less like a compromised, frustrating ordeal. Rest assured, it’s still tough enough for Soulsborne fans like us. What stands out most here is how swiftly FromSoftware addressed player feedback – an anomaly considering their reputation for being aloof and elusive, preferring to work in seclusion from the masses.
