As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for interesting anecdotes and their impact on art, I find Hozier’s story about the inspiration behind “Too Sweet” to be both captivating and relatable. The fact that this tale involves a chance encounter with none other than Cillian Murphy adds a layer of intrigue that is truly unique.
34-year-old artist known as Hozier (whose birth name is Andrew John Hozier-Byrne) reminisced about a tipsy incident that served as the basis for some of the lyrics in his song “Too Sweet.” Interestingly, this tale also features actor Cillian Murphy, best recognized for his role in Oppenheimer.
As reported by People magazine, the performer disclosed this tale during his Unreal Unearth tour at Minnesota’s Xcel Energy Center in August. A spectator at the concert posted a video of the moment on TikTok on August 18, as mentioned by People magazine.
During the performance, the singer of Take Me to Church shared, “I likely would have died without telling it, but since it’s an intriguing tale, I prefer it comes from me.” He went on to share that he had run into his closest friend the previous night before catching a flight. Remarkably, he hadn’t even begun packing when they started their drinks together.
That evening, the musician admitted to having had quite a bit to drink, similar to many others. The following thing he recollected was his friend startlingly rousing him early the next day. Hozier shared that, standing up so abruptly and being rather tall, he humorously remarked that if he were to fall, he’d already be halfway back home.
The performer admitted, “I was striding quickly when suddenly, ‘Pow!’ My head collided hard with a window.” Despite hitting the wall quite forcefully, he made an effort to rise once more and eventually gathered his belongings and made it to the airport, albeit in a pretty battered condition.
He confided, “I’m quite shaken, similar to the feeling of a lingering hangover where one trembles.” The singer later disclosed that as he glanced to his left on the plane, he spotted a renowned Irish actor. The artist from Work Song admitted that he too experiences star-struck moments when encountering individuals who he has only seen in numerous screen appearances.
Hozier went on, “When I see Cillian Murphy to my left…” he tried hard not to gawk at him. The musician admitted his admiration for the actor and explained that he began to scratch an area where he had taken a fall, growing worried as it seemed “damp.”
Hozier remarked, “I exclaimed, ‘Wow, that’s damp!’ So I was on the plane, scrutinizing my hands as if they were slightly injured.”
Afterward, the performer glanced to his side, while the thespian leaned low in their chair and enquired about the situation. The musician calmly continued with their performance.
In addition, he disclosed that this uncommon journey served as a source of inspiration for Too Sweet’s lyrics, particularly the part about falling repeatedly. Hozier explained, “The line ‘I aim low, I aim true and the ground’s where I go.’ I had never shared that with Cillian Murphy before. At the time, I didn’t have the courage to tell him how badly I was feeling.”
