Artificial intelligence is becoming a major concern for artists in all creative fields, particularly commercial ones like movies and TV. Comic books are facing a unique challenge, as companies explore using AI to generate content without compensating human artists. However, DC Comics is drawing a line. According to reports from *Comic Book Club*, DC’s President, Publisher, and Chief Creative Officer, Jim Lee, has stated the company will never use AI to create its comics. He made this clear while speaking at the pre-NYCC Retailers’ Summit.
The imperfections are what bring my art to life – the little mistakes, the uneven lines, even the moments of uncertainty. AI can collect and combine existing art, but it can’t dream, feel, or truly create.
Jim Lee is a well-known comic book artist, in addition to his role as head of DC Comics. He first became famous in the 1990s for his work on Marvel’s *X-Men*. It’s especially meaningful to hear his positive outlook because he’s a creator himself, not just a company executive. People who were present at his speech say the audience responded with enthusiastic applause. While Lee’s views might not represent everyone at DC’s parent company, Warner Bros., it’s a promising step forward.
This was EXTREMELY well received in the room. Cheering!

As a lifelong comic book and movie fan, I’m really hoping Marvel, Dark Horse, Image, and the rest follow suit and protect their artists. I’d love to see them make a strong statement at New York Comic Con. It feels like creative work is facing unprecedented challenges right now, and honestly, it just doesn’t sit right with me. If Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman were real, they’d be fighting for the rights of creators, and the people *writing* their stories should be doing the same.
