In December, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Miami will be showcasing a significant exhibition featuring renowned American painter, Joyce Pensato. With more than 60 pieces spanning five decades on display, this comprehensive survey represents the artist’s most extensive presentation to date and provides viewers with an enlightening perspective on her diverse artistic journey. From her initial explorations in gestural abstraction to her iconic black and white figurative compositions, the exhibition will offer a captivating glimpse into Pensato’s expansive body of work.

The upcoming exhibition, titled in honor of its artist, will showcase Pensato’s early sketches of Batman from 1976, oil paintings with vibrant, graffiti-style scribbles, and enamel works created in the early 1990s that include iconic cartoon figures such as Felix the Cat and reinterpretations of Disney characters along with those from South Park.

Joyce Pensato showcased a unique brilliance in her artwork, particularly in her interpretation of American pop culture, making her a trailblazing artist. However, the acknowledgement of her significant contributions has been delayed, and there hasn’t been a comprehensive exhibition that encompasses the full extent of her impact and style.
