‘I Wouldn’t Have Stayed…’: Naomi Watts Reveals To Have Almost Quit Acting Before Landing Role In THIS Movie

Naomi Watts is reminiscing about the early stages of her acting journey. In a recent interview on Live With Kelly and Mark, Watts shared that she considered leaving acting altogether before securing the role of Diane Selwyn/Betty Elms in the 2001 film Mulholland Drive.

During a chat with Kelly Ripa, the actress revealed that it was only because she encountered director David Lynch that she didn’t return home after her breakthrough film. She likened him to someone indispensable, who effectively persuaded her to stay in America.

Reflecting on her early career, the actress admitted that without meeting David Lynch, she might not have persisted in the industry. After nine years of unsuccessful auditions, the situation seemed dire.

She went on to admit that she was pushing people away and causing discomfort because of her persistent urgency for a job. Her agent at the time even told her, “You’re too intense. You’re making people uncomfortable.” Clearly, she was in a state of desperation, needing employment as soon as possible.

Later, Watts mentioned that Lynch contacted her for an audition and the selection process, which was quite unusual, is what led to her being chosen.

In simpler terms, the actress explained that the person she was talking with made her sit down, looked directly at her, and asked questions. Often, she felt like she was trying to get away or hurry things along because she thought she wasn’t good enough (not funny, not attractive, too old, etc.). However, this person seemed to see through her self-doubts and managed to remove her defensive layers.

Ultimately, the actress secured the role of the lauded character in Mulholland Drive after meeting the esteemed filmmaker who later passed away.
