Gwyneth Paltrow, aged 52, recently opened up about her health, detailing how she resorted to drinking during the Los Angeles fires in January. This celebrated actress, recognized for her wellness company Goop, talked candidly about her battles with menopause and anxiety, stressing the role of stress and alcohol on her symptoms.
On an episode of her Goop podcast, Paltrow candidly shared, “I’m quite scattered at the moment due to my current situation, as I’m going through a lot.” She further clarified that although her menopause symptoms are typically manageable, the anxiety caused by the January wildfires pushed her towards heavy drinking. “I believe I drank every night,” she disclosed. “I was using alcohol as a means to cope.
As an ardent admirer, let me share how Gwyneth Paltrow usually keeps her alcohol intake minimal – maybe just a drink every seven days or so. But the recent wildfires took a heavy toll on my serenity, making my symptoms worsen dramatically. It was the first moment I truly recognized the link between cause and effect in such a profound way, she confessed.
Apart from dealing with drinking issues, Paltrow has faced sleep disorders, particularly insomnia, since entering menopause – a problem she hadn’t experienced before. As she put it, “I’ve always been a deep sleeper,” but then she’d wake up and be gripped by anxiety. She’d ruminate about every mistake she ever made, every hurt feeling she caused to others, and stay awake for as long as six hours.
During the discussion, medical specialist Dr. Mary Clare Haver stepped in, describing perimenopause as a turbulent period of hormonal imbalance, causing symptoms to be erratic and unforeseeable. Paltrow concurred, expressing that she believes she’s been experiencing it for quite some time.
Instead of merely discussing her challenges, Paltrow underscored the significance of candid conversations about menopause. She started inquiring from her friends during dinner gatherings, “Is this happening to you too?” she questioned. “For some reason,” she added, “this life stage is often viewed as something embarrassing, but it needn’t be.
In the midst of the fires, Paltrow also conveyed her profound sorrow for those impacted and emphasized that her company had contributed a generous sum of $2 million to assist the victims.
Gwyneth Paltrow emphasizes the importance of open discussions on menopause and the experiences women encounter. She expressed, “If life goes as planned, we experience perimenopause. Eventually, I’ll reach menopause. I’m eager to learn about this phase and the benefits it brings.
