As a die-hard Marvel fan with a soft spot for Cobie Smulders and her unforgettable portrayal of Maria Hill, I can’t help but feel both amused and slightly envious about her unexpected journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Cobie Smulders’ character Maria Hill significantly influenced the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) reliable right-hand woman. Despite Hill not having any standalone films before her shocking demise in Secret Invasion, she featured in numerous MCU productions, such as Spider-Man: Far From Home following Avengers: Endgame. Recently, the actress admitted that she was taken aback by her character’s plot twist in the 2019 film.
Fans continue to think that eliminating Maria Hill, played by Cobie Smulders, in Secret Invasion was unwarranted, yet her character has undeniably left a lasting impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Making her first appearance in 2012’s The Avengers, the actor has delivered numerous impressive performances. However, the shocking twist in Spider-Man: Far From Home was unforeseen by her, as she learned about it only after filming had wrapped up.
During Terrificon 2024 (as reported by Comicbook.com), Smulders stated, “I wasn’t truly myself.” In the film “Fury,” they introduced Spider-Man to partner with Jake Gyllenhaal’s character, Quentin Beck, who portrayed a superhero from another reality. His mission was to combat a significant danger. However, it was revealed that Beck was actually Mysterio, an illusionist supervillain. Even characters like Spider-Man, Fury, and Hill were deceived by this ruse, but this wasn’t the real twist.
In the final moments of the film, it was unveiled that Fury and Hill were not genuine characters but rather Skrull impostors named Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) and Soren (Sharon Blynn). The Skrulls had disguised themselves by assuming their forms. Meanwhile, Fury was actually in space during this time. This revelation was crucial as it laid the groundwork for the Marvel series on Disney Plus, “Secret Invasion”, where Fury, upon his return from space, confronts a dangerous group of shapeshifting Skrulls who present a threat to humanity.
Despite the scene apparently being crucial for Marvel Studios to provide a teaser for Secret Invasion ahead of its release, it seems that they failed to inform Smulders about it prior. “I only found out about it after we had finished filming,” the actress explained at the event. “[Marvel Studios] eventually informed me. They said something like, ‘Just so you know, we were going to include this scene,'” she continued.
Jon Watts, director of Spider-Man: Far From Home, preferred that there be no alteration in Smulders’ character to avoid revealing the twist too soon. Instead, he asked her to perform naturally. As Smulders explained, “They wanted me to act normally,” she was around 42 years old at the time. Even if I knew the secret, we were still portraying the reality of each day.”
Following Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home proved to be a massive box office and critical hit, paving the way for further collaborations between Sony and Marvel involving the character. This led to another installment in the series, Spider-Man: No Way Home – one of the biggest productions from the studios, featuring the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield along with their respective villains from their individual universes.
It’s been verified that there will be a fourth Spider-Man film in Holland’s series, but details about its official production are currently being kept secret due to Jon Watts leaving the franchise after helming the trilogy.
