As a lifestyle expert with decades of experience in media and entertainment, I find it disheartening to witness such misinformed comments from someone as influential as Janet Jackson. Her remarks about Vice President Kamala Harris’s ethnicity not only contradict the truth but also perpetuate harmful stereotypes that have no place in our society.
In a recent conversation with The Guardian, Janet Jackson, currently aged 58, has been found to have made inaccurate statements regarding Vice President Kamala Harris’s racial background. In this discussion, Jackson suggested that Harris primarily identifies as Indian, which would mean that if Harris were to be elected President, she wouldn’t make history as the first Black woman to hold that office.
These views fall under the realm of conspiracy theories, once popularized by political figures on the right, such as Donald Trump.
During the interview, the topic of Kamala Harris potentially making history as America’s first female African-American president was raised to the Grammy-winning artist. Regarding Harris’ ethnicity, Jackson made a comment, as reported by the British news outlet, stating, “I heard she’s not Black. She’s Indian.
In this scenario, it appears that Nosheen Iqbal appeared displeased, but Jackson firmly asserted that Janet Jackson’s paternal lineage was ‘White’, despite inaccuracies. She admitted that she hadn’t kept up with recent news. When questioned about the readiness of the nation to have a woman of color as its leader, Jackson expressed uncertainty and stated that whichever candidate wins, there will likely be “chaos” or “mayhem”.
Contrary to Jackson’s claim, Kamala Harris’s background and ethnicity have always been clear. Her father, Donald J. Harris, is a Jamaican native who relocated to the U.S. for his studies at the University of California- Berkeley in Economics. Similarly, her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, came from India and they got married while studying at Berkeley. Harris has consistently maintained this background, and any attempts to misrepresent it have fallen short, as she identifies with both South Asian and African American heritage.
78-year-old Donald Trump made false statements about Kamala Harris’ race during a convention of the National Association of Black Journalists in Chicago. He stated, “I believed she had always been of Indian descent, and she was emphasizing her Indian background. I didn’t realize she was African American until recently, when it appeared she became black. So I’m not sure, is she Indian or is she African American?
Harris attended Howard University, a well-known historically black college in the U.S., where her appreciation for her African-American heritage as a woman deepened. In her memoir “The Truths We Hold” (2019), she delved into her experiences growing up as a Black woman, discussing with her mother the unique struggles faced by Black women in America. Notably, Harris was also the first female, first Black American, and first South Asian American to hold the position of Vice President in the White House.
