‘I Was Thinking Maybe There’s More…’: Rings of Power Star Charlie Vickers Says He Didn’t Know Halbrand Was Sauron Until S1E03

As an ardent fan who has spent countless nights under the starlit sky of Middle-earth and more than one Sunday afternoon huddled around my precious tomes of Tolkien lore, I must say that the first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power left me utterly spellbound! The masterful unraveling of Halbrand’s true identity as Sauron was nothing short of a magical revelation.

In the initial season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, there was a significant plot twist that left both viewers and certain actors unaware. Actor Charlie Vickers, portraying Halbrand, only discovered his character’s real identity as Sauron after filming had already progressed significantly.

Throughout the initial season of The Rings of Power, viewers were left in suspense, especially regarding the true identity of Sauron. A puzzling character named Halbrand, portrayed by Charlie Vickers, emerged as a supposedly lost king from the Southlands, stirring speculation among audiences.

As the plot unfolded, he grew to be a trusted companion of Galadriel, the Elven warrior portrayed by Morfydd Clark. But it wasn’t until the last few episodes of the season that a shocking truth came to light: Halbrand was none other than Sauron, in disguise, which left many stunned.

During a private conversation with The Indian Express in Singapore, Vickers admitted that it wasn’t until the third episode of Season 1 that he fully understood the real essence of his character.

According to Vickers, it wasn’t until we were nearly ready to film the third episode that the show creators, JD Payne and Patrick McKay, shared the twist with him on set. They said, “This is your kingdom,” pointing to the Northern Waste, also known as Forodwaith.

In The Rings of Power’s initial season, its creators skillfully concealed Sauron’s true identity, leading the audience on a guessing game. They employed clever storytelling devices to suggest that characters like Daniel Weyman’s Stranger might be Sauron, thereby generating intrigue and maintaining viewer engagement.

Before receiving the official confirmation, Vickers had been pondering if Halbrand’s identity might be something other than what was presented. He expressed a sense of relief when he found out, saying, “It was good to know because I had my doubts.” In other words, he was wondering if there was more to Halbrand’s persona, and it felt satisfying to have the confirmation.

Hiding Halbrand’s real character until deep into the first season significantly shaped the narrative of The Rings of Power, as the series draws heavily from J.R.R. Tolkien’s comprehensive background material, particularly the Appendices in The Lord of the Rings.

In the era known as the Second Age, many millennia prior to the happenings depicted in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, this collection of stories follows the emergence of darkness in the realm of Middle-earth, leading ultimately to Sauron’s resurgence.
