‘I Turned 63 And…:’ Dennis Quaid Gets Emotional While Opening Up About Outliving His Father

As a lifestyle expert reflecting upon Dennis Quaid‘s life journey, I find myself deeply moved by the poignant moments he shared about his father and the impact of age on one’s perspective. At 70 years old, Dennis seems to be grappling with the realization that he has surpassed his father’s lifespan, a milestone that brings both melancholy and a sense of wisdom.

Dennis Quaid reminisced about times spent with his late father, who lived only to be 63 years old. At 70, the actor remains active, and shared that upon reaching his father’s age, he found himself abruptly awakened in the dead of night.

In my latest sit-down on the third hour of the Today show, I found myself reminiscing with Al Roker about tales from my childhood, specifically those involving my father, William R. As the gracious host delved into my appearance as Chessy in The Parent Trap during my teenage years, I couldn’t help but emotionally express that I had no inkling of what lay ahead for me in life at that time.

In the course of their chat, Quaid brought up his father. He reminisced that turning 63 triggered a memory of William R. The actor explained, “Six months after my 63rd birthday, I woke up in the middle of the night with a sudden realization. I calculated the days from my dad’s birthday to when he passed away and compared it to the days from my birthday to when I had that realization. Remarkably, they were the same number.”

Additionally, he mentioned, “On that particular evening, I was already older than my father ever was. Yet, he continues to reside within my heart, much like an enduring presence. However, describing the sensation is challenging.”

Speaking about Dennis’ life narrative, Roker, now 70 himself, expressed, “There’s something poignant: my dad passed away at 69. I’ve always felt a sense of regret that he didn’t reach 70. It’s quite unusual to surpass the age my father did.”

Actor Dennis Quaid expressed that music embodies a sense of celebration and gratitude for life, serving as both a form of expression and a form of spiritual connection. He added that at this stage in his life, he no longer yearns for the aspirations he held in his twenties and thirties.

During the same conversation, Dennis Quaid talked about his personal life too. He has three children, including Jack Quaid, with his wife Meg Ryan, whom he married as his second spouse. In his own words, Quaid referred to himself as a “dorky dad” towards his kids. In an interview with People Magazine in 2023, Quaid confessed, “I often feel like a dorky dad because… especially my daughter makes me feel that way. It’s very uncomfortable and awkward. Teenagers can be really awkward.”

Beyond that, he emphasized, “I truly enjoy being a father. Honestly, I believe I make a great dad. Things have gone exceptionally well up to this point. Jack has developed admirably well. I am incredibly proud not just of him, but also Thomas and Zoe.”

Dennis Quaid is married to Laura Savoie and shares twins with his third wife.
