‘I Trained For 5 Years’: Mark Wahlberg Opens Up About Difficulties And Intense Training While Shooting 2010’s The Fighter

As a dedicated follower of the Hollywood scene and a fan of gritty dramas, I have to admire Mark Wahlberg‘s dedication and perseverance in bringing the character of Dicky Eklund from The Fighter to life. The movie’s tumultuous production journey, filled with casting changes, director switches, and budget issues, was reminiscent of a real-life boxing match.

As a devoted admirer and follower of cinema, I’ve had the privilege of being part of the talented cast in the legendary 2010 film, The Fighter. Although this movie eventually earned prestigious recognition at the Oscars, I, myself, experienced the hardships we encountered during the production.

Beyond that, I must confess, I was utterly captivated by Wahlberg’s account of the grueling preparations he underwent to bring his role in the movie to life. In an exclusive chat with Variety, this dynamic actor of Ted fame opened up about the casting challenges we faced. It seemed like some high-profile figures connected with the film decided to step back from the project.

Speaking with the media outlet, the 53-year-old actor disclosed that there were changes in directors, and bringing the character to life required significant effort.

The actor explained, “For five years, I practiced with weighted bags like the ones used for transporting stage equipment. I carried speed bags, double-end bags, and other gear. We were all set to film at Paramount with a substantial budget, but unfortunately, the project fell through. After that, we lost Darren Aronofsky as director, then Brad Pitt, and finally Matt Damon.”

He continued by stating, “Later, it transformed into an independent film produced by David O. Russell and Christian. The process of creating it spanned over five years intermittently. Notably, the boxing aspect was unlike a typical scenario where one trains for five months prior to the initial filming schedule.”

Production on the film The Fighter began in 2003, with Eminem initially considered for the main role, which he eventually declined. Instead, the part of Mickey Ward was offered to Matt Damon, but he also turned it down.

In 2005, Wahlberg got cast for the part and was required to adhere to a rigorous diet and exercise routine to match the role’s requirements.

As stated by the actor who portrayed Fear, even after receiving approval for the movie, there were ongoing problems during its production. Wahlberg expressed it as, “Things disintegrated, and then once we finally got the go-ahead, I was able to resume, either pick up where I left off or maintain the abilities.”

The Fighter, directed by David O. Russell, went on to win two Academy Awards.
