Initially, I delved into The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered as a solitary individual, intending to rush through the primary storyline while live-streaming, with plans to explore side quests at my leisure later on. However, unintentionally, I found myself embroiled in the Fighter’s Guild quest line during my stay in Chorrol. There, I encountered Modryn Oreyn – a gruff yet faithful Dunmer whose captivating eyes held a certain charm. Despite his persistent inquiries about pursuing his mission to track someone down, I was preoccupied with the pressing issue of Oblivion gates appearing everywhere and causing chaos. As a result, Modryn had no choice but to join me reluctantly.
At first, Modryn seemed more like a slight nuisance than a friend, but over time, our relationship evolved into an enduring platonic bond. Despite our contrasting personalities – I was chatty while he was reserved and grumpy – we found common ground. Unfortunately, Modryn lacks tact and respect for personal space, often invading my privacy by standing too close or staring intently. It felt as though he was probing deep into my soul, perhaps passing judgment on our unequal friendship dynamic, where I often forced him to accompany me without offering much assistance in return. In hindsight, I realize I could have treated him more kindly.
It soon became clear, following a couple of intense battles, that Modryn was without a shirt. Memories of my failed attempt to watch Twilight resurfaced. I wondered, dearly Modryn, why you chose to remove your shirt? Was it an attempt to flirt, perhaps disregarding personal space boundaries? I found myself perplexed. The situation seemed even more intense given that he was nearly bare-chested and standing so near me. At least he still had his reliable mace for defense.
Magic Modryn
Later in the game, his mace mysteriously disappeared, and instead of using it, he began to punch any enemies we encountered. It was quite amusing and strange. Frequently, he would lose consciousness because he wasn’t particularly strong at that moment. But then, he’d quickly get back up, and the cycle would continue. I couldn’t believe it! During that time, I was live-streaming, so a viewer looked it up for me. I didn’t realize this before, but if your partner’s armor or weapons break due to excessive use, they simply remove the item and, in essence, fight without any protection.
Initially, I chose to consult with Modryn, as I believe that open dialogue is crucial. However, he wasn’t interested in discussing his armor predicament, leaving me somewhat bewildered. In an attempt to clarify the situation, I resorted to sneakily inspecting his armor. I had no intention of stealing anything from him, but unfortunately, my actions were misconstrued. He became enraged at me, and our bond was severely damaged. Oh dear, that didn’t go as planned! I reverted to an earlier save and withdrew, having learned a valuable lesson from my mistake.
Here’s another way of expressing your thoughts: After a brief search on Google, it appears my initial plan wasn’t entirely wrong. I considered waiting until Modryn fell asleep, stealing his armor, fixing it, and replacing it while he was sleeping. However, I’m not confident that my pickpocketing abilities are advanced enough to make off with such a bulky piece of armor without him noticing. Frankly, I don’t think I possess those skills at all. So, in the end, I decided not to tamper with Modryn and his armor. He didn’t seem overly concerned about the situation and he continued to fight valiantly.
The real hero of Kvatch
Over time, we formed a strong attachment towards each other. I affectionately called him “the muscular charms of Modryn” and grew accustomed to always seeing this partially clothed individual persistently by my side. It was quite absurd.
In the experience of those who’ve played Oblivion, there are some massive battles you’ll encounter. One particularly noteworthy is the Defense of Bruma where you rally your accumulated forces to confront the Great Gate. This battle is grand and stays etched in memory when your companion is a formidable, semi-clad figure. At this juncture, Modryn was weaponless. He’d simply charge in, delivering punches to every enemy in sight, hoping for the best. He’d frequently fall, but he’d always rise again – a beautiful allegory of perseverance in the face of immense hardship, encouraging us to keep trying no matter how daunting the challenge.
After completing that task, you journeyed to Paradise to obtain the Amulet of Kings. Modryn didn’t accompany me on this journey. I must admit, I felt rather lost and exposed without his presence. His moral support was always reassuring, even if it was just that. Towards the end of the game, there were many battles in which he wasn’t there. It was a huge relief when he reappeared at the end, albeit far too near to me, and still in need of a fashion makeover.
As I savored the thrill of saving the world, a pang of sadness hit me, realizing my time with Modryn was drawing to a close. But then someone sparked a thought – I hadn’t dived into any Fighters’ Guild content yet! There was still time for me to reach the level where Modryn would create art for me. It wasn’t like the iconic Titanic moment, but I couldn’t help feeling excited about what lay ahead. After all, Modryn and I share a unique connection. Who knows? Maybe I’ll even brush up on my pickpocketing skills – just for him.
