The iconic ’90s horror movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is coming back with a bang, and it’s not just a comeback – it’s bringing some well-known characters and a fresh batch of potential targets. The new sequel is set to hit theaters on July 18, 2025, and excitingly, both Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. have confirmed their return.
Before the film’s official debut, a fresh take on the original story is teased in the newly unveiled trailer, leaving fans excitedly anticipating it.
The narrative shares striking similarities with a familiar horror tale: A band of five companions encounter an automobile mishap. Rather than confessing their predicament, they opt to conceal it. A chilling sequence of events unfolds one year later as a mysterious murderer begins tracking them down, seemingly well-informed about their past transgressions.
In an interview with People, Hewitt, who previously played Julie James, openly shared her struggles returning to the role after over two decades. She confessed, “For 48 hours before filming, I had intense anxiety as I wondered if I could handle it and if I was capable of delivering a convincing performance. The pressure was immense.
In addition, she likened working on the latest movie to catching up with long-lost friends: “It was like a high school reunion. It was as if I hadn’t seen these people in 150 years and now, suddenly, we were together again.
As a die-hard fan of this movie series, let me clarify something exciting: This isn’t a reboot or remake we’re talking about; it’s a long-awaited continuation! You might recall that Sony had plans back in 2014 to revive the franchise with Mike Flanagan at the helm as writer, but that didn’t materialize. Now, with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson directing, the slasher franchise is taking a fresh turn.
Robinson has explicitly stated that this new movie is significantly more intense compared to the one released in the ’90s. She revealed to People magazine that the violence level has been increased dramatically, making it far more brutal than what fans would typically anticipate.
Back in 1997, the movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer” made its debut in cinemas and became a massive hit, earning $125 million against a production cost of only $17 million. A year later, a sequel was released, followed by another direct-to-video film in 2006. More recently, the story found new life as a TV series in 2021, but unfortunately, it lasted only one season before being discontinued.
As a die-hard fan, I can hardly contain my excitement! The beloved franchise has returned to the silver screen, taking us back to its humble origins. For years, we’ve yearned for a reunion of our favorite characters, and it looks like our prayers have been answered!
