‘I Hope Not’: Despicable Me Director Chris Renaud Shares His Thoughts On Making Possible Live Action

As an ardent fan of the Despicable Me franchise, I wholeheartedly stand with Chris Renaud and Pete Docter in their skepticism towards a live-action Minions movie. With decades of combined experience in animation, these visionaries have crafted a world that transcends reality and pushes the boundaries of what is possible in cartoons.

As a longstanding director within the world of animation, I’ve always held a deep appreciation for the Despicable Me franchise. Having collaborated with Pierre Coffin to bring the original movie to life in 2010, I can confidently say that this series truly shines in its animated form. When it comes to discussing a potential live-action remake of the Minions film, I feel compelled to express my own thoughts on the matter.

The 57-year-old filmmaker expressed his hope for something different when asked if there would be a real-life adaptation of the yellow characters created by Illumination Animation and Universal Pictures, as reported in an interview with Film Hounds magazine.

Renaud found it hard to accept the concept of a live-action Minions movie, as he hadn’t been informed about the potential live-action future of the franchise, nor did it appeal to him much.

He insinuated that the animated world of the Minions presents far greater potential than what could be done in a real-life scenario.

In his own words, Renaud, who was also the director of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, emphasized that for him, the world is characterized by its liveliness and the ability it gives us to pull off feats that we normally could not. This perspective is evident in scenes like the one where a minion becomes trapped inside a vending machine or when Gru miraculously survives an explosion following an attack on Vector – moments that are plausible only within the realm of animation.

Pete Docter, Pixar’s chief creative officer, shared similar sentiments with Renaud during an interview with Time Magazine in June. He expressed discomfort about the concept of a live-action remake, citing the 2007 animated film, Ratatouille, as an example of how ideas intended for animation may not translate well to real life. Furthermore, Docter prefers creating innovative and distinctive projects rather than remakes, which hold less appeal for him.

Chris Renaud has a diverse career in the world of animation, encompassing roles such as filmmaking, design, storyboard artistry, and voice acting. Partnering with French animator Pierre Coffin, aged 57, he helped create the highly successful Despicable Me film series, which generated over a billion dollars. Apart from his directorial responsibilities, Coffin is also known for voicing the Minions in the franchise.

In 2013, the pair additionally took charge of Despicable Me 2. However, it was Renaud who resumed directing duties for the fourth film in 2024. Meanwhile, he played a role as producer for the spin-offs, which include Minions released in 2015 and Minions: The Rise of Gru in 2022.

It seems that talk about a third installment in the Minions spinoff series is on the rise! Back in July, it was announced that Minions 3 could potentially hit theaters on June 30, 2027. This upcoming movie will be led by director Pierre Coffin, who has previously worked on films like The Secret Life of Pets and the 2015 Minions spinoff. Brian Lynch, known for his contributions to scripts such as The Secret Life of Pets and the aforementioned Minions spinoff, is set to write the screenplay for this new adventure.

In the summer of 2024, Despicable Me 4 debuted in cinemas on July 5, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, it surpassed the $1 billion (USD 5 billion) milestone in worldwide box office earnings. This impressive accomplishment has secured a place for the series among the greats in animated film history.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but gush over the Despicable Me series, where the storyline revolves around me, or rather, the character Felonius Gru – a supervillain with a heart of gold who transforms into an exceptional parent. The hilarious Steve Carell lends his voice to this remarkable transformation.
